Crochet bag “Azalea”
Crochet a large bag of flower squares with our beginner-friendly instruction
This bag “Azalea” is perfect for any errand on the town or at the gym and also has plenty of space for your computer. The bag can be crocheted in as many colors as you want but in this instruction it will appear with 3 different colors. You will need 3 rolls of EKO Nano and a 6 mm crochet hook. If the bag is laid flat, the dimensions are about 54cm wide and 54 about high (without handles).
Yarn consumption: Approx. 1100 g depending on how hard or loose you crochet and whether the squares are made larger or smaller than the pattern. Please note that if you want a bag in a basic color as shown in the pattern, you will need two rolls of the same basic color.

This is what you need:
Here you can directly purchase the material for the product. Please note that the instruction is digital and appears here on the page (no written instruction).

Here's how to do it
We begin by crocheting all the squares. Then, we assemble the front and back pieces and crochet handles onto these pieces. After that, crochet the short sides and the bottom. Finally, we assemble everything.

Let's start with the 12 flower boxes. The squares will be about 16 x 16 cm in size depending on how hard you crochet.
LARGE FLOWER SQUARE
The Inner Ring — The Magic Ring (take the innermost color first, we'll start with that).
Start with color 1. Hold the yarn in your left hand. Twist the yarn around your fingers (left hand) three times. Use your crochet hook to go under the first two loops and hook the third with your crochet hook. Pick up the yarn again and pull under the two finger loops, hook the yarn onto the crochet hook and pull through. Now the loop of the crochet hook holds together the double “inner ring” and you can proceed below.
Round 1: Crochet two simple loops (these replace the first double crochet). Then crochet 11 double crochet in the innermost ring. A double crochet is crocheted by taking the yarn over the crochet and going down with the crochet into the innermost ring, pick up yarn and pull through (you now have three loops on the crochet hook), pick up yarn and pull through two loops (you have two loops left on the crochet), pick up the yarn one last time and pull through the last two loops. You have now crocheted a double crochet.
Crochet a total of 11 double crochets plus a chain with two loops at the beginning. Finish by passing down the second loop from the loops you made at the beginning. Pick up yarn and pull through both loops immediately. Leave about 10 cm of yarn end and cut and fasten (you can also fasten all ends to the end if you prefer).
Round 2 : Start by making a loop around the crochet hook. One way you can do this is to wrap the yarn around your index and middle finger and then pull the yarn up so that the loop locks when you tighten.
Go down the stitch between the first and second double crochet and pick up the yarn and pull through the loop. Now you crochet two loops. Now you should go in the same stitch again and crochet a double crochet BUT you should not make the last pass. You take the yarn over the crochet and go down with the crochet hook into the stitch, pick up yarn and pull through (you now have three loops on the crochet hook), pick up yarn and pull through two loops (you have two loops left on the crochet hook). Now you do the same two more times and you then have four loops on the crochet hook. Pick up yarn and pull through all the loops. Crochet a loop.
Go down in the next stitch and do the same thing but you don´t have to crochet three loose loops but you crochet four half double crochets instead of three loops + two half double crochets. Do this 11 times (don´t forget a loose loop in between). Finish by going down into the second loop of the first chain, pick up yarn and pull through.
When you are done, you should have 12 leaves. Leave 10 cm of yarn end and cut.
Round 3: Make a loop around the crochet and go down between the first two leaves from the previous row and pick up yarn and pull through.
Crochet three loose loops. Then crochet two double crochet in the same hole, and then two loose loops. Crochet three double crochet and two loose loops between each 'leaf' (in each hole). Finish by going down the third loop of the first chain, pick up yarn and pull through. Leave 10 cm of yarn end and cut.
Round 4 - now we will crochet the round that makes the box square.
Hole 1: Make a loop around the crochethook and start in a 'hole' and crochet 3 loops. Then crochet two double crochet in the same hole. Do not crochet a loop between the double crochet.
Hole 2: Crochet three double crochet.
Hole 3: Now you should crochet treble crochet. Take the yarn over the crochet hook twice (you have three loops) and go down and pick up the yarn and pull through. Retrieve the yarn again and pull through 2 loops. Get yarn and pull through two loops and pick up the yarn one last time and pull through the last two loops. Do the same thing two more times. Crochet two loops, and then three treble crochet in the same hole. This is the first corner.
Repeat holes 1-3 a total of three more times so you have four sides. Finish by going through the first stitch on the round, picking up yarn, and pulling everything through immediately. Cut off.
Now we will crochet the last lap. If you want to make the bag bigger, crochet more of these laps.
Round 5: Make a loop around the crochet and now crochet ordinary single stitches in each stitch and at the corners crochet three single stitches into the holes. A single stitches is crocheted by going down the stitch, fetching yarn and pulling through, retrieving yarn and pulling through both loops. Finish by going through the first stitch and pulling through. Cut off.
Attach all yarn ends. Tie the remaining tail in a knot around the last loop (or with another yarn end) on the inside of the box to prevent it from unraveling. Hide the tail by attaching it through some nearby loops.
CROCHET THE SQUARES (front and back) - see video 14:44
Now we will crochet together four squares with each other that will be the front side. We will do the same with the back then.
Start by putting all four squares in a square and crochet it horizontally with each other thinking about having nice sides front/out. Holding them together with the wrong side to each other, make a loop on the crochet and go down the corners of the two squares. Crochet slip stitched in the front stitch arc in the front box and the front stitch arc in the back box (the loop closest to you on each square). A slip stitch is crocheted by going down with the crochet needle in both squares (in the stitch indicated above), picking up yarn and pulling through both stitches directly.
Then crochet them together vertically so that you have crocheted all four squares with each other. Cut off and fasten the yarn. Now crochet the squares together in the other direction so that all four squares are stuck together, forming one piece. Cut off and attach. Do the same with both parts.
Handle - watch video 19:20
Go down the corner of the front/back cover. Mark on the fine side where you want the handle to sit. Mark with yarn ends so you know where to start crocheting the handle and where to go back down on the bag. Crochet loose loops until you are at the mark. Then crochet as many loose loops as you wish for your bag (19 loops are crocheted in the pattern).
Remember not to make too small handles. Then go down at your mark again and crochet loose loops until you are on the other side. There you make a loose loop and turn and crochet back, starting in the second stitch. The next row, crochet one stitch in each stitch, including over the loose loops. Finish with a loop.
Continue as many rounds as you wish. Two more rounds are crocheted in the pattern. Do the same with both sides.
ATTACH THE SQUARES (side pieces) - see video 26:2
Crochet together two of the squares that will sit on the side of the bag. Crochet one of the sides together, remember to have the fine sides facing/outside and the wrong sides facing each other. Crochet them together in the same way as above. When you are finished, cut the yarn and attach the yarn as before in the pattern.
Now we will add rows to the top of the piece, just as we did on the front piece/back piece fixed there we crocheted handles). We do this so that all sides of the bag should be the same height. Count how many rows you added extra on the front/back and crochet similar to many at the top on the side pieces.
Go down with the crochet hook on top of the side piece and crochet single crochet stitches until you are on the other side. There you crochet a loop and turn back and continue in the same way until you have made all the rows. Measure the side piece with the front and back cover so that they are the same size. Do the same with the second side piece. When you're done, attach the yarn.
BOTTOM - watch video 30:10
Now we will crochet the bottom. The size of the bottom should be the same length as the front/back and the same width as the side pieces.
Row 1. Start with one loop (as we did on the box), and then crochet loose loops (count the number of stitches on the short side of the front piece). However, make sure that there will be an uneven number of stitches.
Row 2. Turn and crochet back, starting in the second stitch and crochet single stitches in each stitch. Finish with a loop and turn over. The total number of stitches is one fewer than your loops at the beginning.
Row 3. On this turn, we will crochet every second stitch of regular stitch and every other deep solid stitch. This is to make the bottom a little thicker.
Now that you've turned your work around, we're going to crochet back. As in row 2, skip the first loop and start in the second stitch. We're going to make a deep stitch that means we go down the hole a notch down than we usually do. This one is called “long” because it looks tall compared to the others. Go down into the hole below, pick up the yarn so you have two loops on the crochet hook, pick up the yarn again and pull through. In the stitch after that you make a single stitch and go down under both of the two lines and pick up the yarn, you have two loops temporarily on the crochet hook, pick up the yarn again and pull through. In the third stitch, make a deep stitch.
Do every other until you're at the end. You always start with a deep single crochet and finish with a single crochet. Finish the row with a simple loose loop before reversing the work. Number of stitches is as many as row 2.
Crochet row 3 as many rows as needed to get the right (slightly smaller) size.
Row 4: When you have approximately the same size (slightly smaller) than the sidepiece/front piece/back, crochet solid stitches around the bottom, one single crochet in each stitch and at the corners you crochet three single crochet.
When this turn is completed, the short side should be as wide as the side piece and the long sides should be as wide as the front/back cover. Cut off and fasten the yarn.
ASSEMBLY - watch video 36:40
Now attach all the parts to the bottom. The fine side on the bottom should be down
Start with the front and have the nice sides of the sides out. Start with a loop in the corner and fasten it as we did before when crocheting the squares together. When you fasten the long side with the bottom, continue to fasten the bottom with the small side piece. Attach the short side to the bottom and in the corner and crochet three stitches in the same stitch. Continue in the same way with the second long side and second small side piece. Cut off and fasten the yarn.
Now we have attached all the sides to the bottom and now we will attach the sides to each other. Start at the bottom in the corner where the sides meet. Make a loop in the corner and then attach the sides to each other on the outside using the same technique we used before. When you are at the top, cut and fasten the yarn. Continue in the same way with the other three sides.
Cut and attach, done!

Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops, make 1 chain stitch.
The difference between the leaves is that Leaf 1 is used at the beginning of the row where you need to start with chain stitches. Leaf 2 is used for the remaining part of the row.
Flower Square (Make 12 squares)
With Color 1:
Round 1: In a MR; Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 11 dc. Join with 1 sl st in the 3rd chain from the beginning, cut yarn and fasten off.
With Color 2:
Round 2: Attach yarn with a sl st in the 1st stitch of the previous round, work Leaf 1 in the same stitch, then Leaf 2 11 times, join with a sl st in the 1st stitch of the round, cut yarn and fasten off. This round consists of 1 Leaf 1 and 11 Leaf 2.
With Color 3:
Round 3: Attach yarn with a sl st in a space between the leaves from the previous round, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in the same space, ch 2, *skip to the next space between leaves, work 3 dc, ch2* x 11, join with a l st in the 3rd chain of the start of the round, cut yarn and fasten off.
With Color 1:
Round 4: Attach yarn with a sl st in a space from the previous round, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in the same space, skip to the next space, work 3 dc. For the corner space, work 3 tc, ch 2, 3 tc. *Skip to the next space, work 3 dc. Skip to the next space, work 3 dc. Skip to the next space and work a corner; 3 tc, ch 2, 3 tc* 3 times*. Join with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain at the start of the round.
Continue with Color 1:
Round 5: Work 1 sc in each st, except in the corners where you make 3 sc in the same stitch. Join with a sl st in the 1st stitch of the round, cut yarn and fasten off. If you want to make the bag bigger, crochet more rounds.
Front and Back Piece
Now, we are going to crochet four squares together to form the front piece. Repeat the same for the back piece. Begin by joining two squares and crochet one of the sides together (make sure the right sides are facing out). Join the squares with the wrong sides facing each other, and crochet slip stitches in the loops closest to you on each square. This will keep the four squares connected. Cut yarn and fasten off. Then, crochet the squares together in the other direction to form one piece. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Border Around the Piece:
Work 1 sc in each stitch around the piece, make 3 hdc in the joining spaces between squares, and 3 sc i the corners.
Handles for the Front and Back Pieces
Lay the piece flat and mark where you want the handles to start and end, and repeat this on both sides. A good tip is to count the number of stitches between the markers to make sure the handles are even.
With Color 1:
Row 1: Attach yarn with a sl st in one corner, single crochet until you reach the 1st marked stitch, make ch 19, skip to the 2nd marked stitch, single crochet until you reach the corner, turn with 1 chain stitch.
Row 2 and onwards: Start in the 2nd stitch from the hook, sc across the row, turn with ch 1.
Continue until the handle reaches the desired height. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Short Sides (Make 2 Short Sides)
Crochet two squares that will be used for the sides of the bag. Join one side of the squares together, making sure the right sides are facing out and the wrong sides are facing each other. Crochet as described before. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Border for Short Sides:
Row 1 and onwards: Attach yarn with a sl st in one corner, sc across the short side, turn with ch 1. Repeat as you did for the front and back sides. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Bottom
Row 1: Crochet a chain with the same number of stitches as the bottom edge of the front and back pieces, plus 1 additional chain (ensure it’s an odd number of stitches).
Row 2: Start in the 2nd stitch from the hook, sc across the row, turn with ch 1.
Row 3 and onwards: Start in the 2nd stitch from the hook, alternate between *1 lsc, 1 sc* across the row, turn with ch 1. Continue until the bottom is as wide as the short sides.
Crochet single crochets along the short sides of the bottom, making 3 single crochets in the corners, and crochet single crochets along the long sides of the bottom. Continue until you return to the starting point.
Assembly
Attach the bottom to the lower side of the front piece, with the wrong sides facing each other. Fasten the yarn with a slip stitch in one corner. Work slip stitches across the side of the bottom. When you reach the first corner, join a side piece and crochet the short side of the side piece with the short side of the bottom, remembering to work 3 single crochets in the corner. Then, attach the back side to the bottom in the same way, and attach the second side piece in the same way as the first (making 3 single crochets in each corner).
Crochet the long sides of the side pieces to the sides of the front and back pieces using slip stitches as before. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Your bag is now complete!I hope this helps!
