Here's how to do it

The bag is crocheted as a tube, where one side (the bottom) is sewn together with the shoulder strap, which will wrap around and thus function both as a handle and the bottom of the bag. The other side (the top) is the bag’s opening. All stitches are worked as regular single crochet stitches, except when a round is finished — then a type of slip stitch is made from the wrong side (images and descriptions are provided). The challenges of this pattern are: Keeping track of the two skeins of yarn you're juggling throughout the pattern so they don’t get tangled. Remembering to carry along the "inactive" thread. Switching yarn before completing the last single crochet with the active color.

INFO
The challenges of this pattern are:

  1. Keeping track of the two skeins of yarn you're juggling throughout the pattern so they don’t get tangled.
  2. Remembering to carry along the "inactive" thread.
  3. Switching yarn before completing the last single crochet with the active color.

Pattern
Start with "Rusty Yellow".
Round 0: Begin by crocheting a chain of 99 chain stitches. If you’re unsure how to crochet a chain, see the video below.

Now we will begin crocheting with both colors on each row.

Before starting a new row, lay the pink yarn over the yellow chain stitches, as we will lock in/encapsulate and carry the pink yarn throughout the entire row. This is to maintain the same thickness throughout the project.

Row 1: Insert your hook into the second yellow chain stitch from the hook. Crochet 98 yellow single crochet stitches – don’t forget to carry the pink yarn throughout the entire row, and tighten it occasionally so that it stays straight.

If you’re unsure how to crochet single crochet stitches, see the video below.

The single crochet stitches have been worked into the back bumps of the chain stitches, but it works just as well to crochet them the usual way. (98 stitches)

Steg 2

Time to join the ends to form a tube/ring. Make sure the crocheted piece lies flat, then bring the ends together.

Pull the hook out of the loop.

Insert the hook from the wrong side into the first yellow single crochet stitch of the same row.

Grab the loop you left behind.

Pull it to the wrong side.

Make a chain stitch with the yellow yarn.

Ready for row 2.

Steg 3

When starting a new round, insert your hook straight into the single crochet stitch you used to join the ends.

Use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round so you know exactly where the first single crochet of the next round should be.

Round 2: *Make 2 yellow single crochet stitches, then change color.

Don’t forget to carry/encapsulate the unused yarn. Then make 2 pink single crochet stitches, and change color.

Make 3 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 3 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 1 pink single crochet stitch, change color. Make 1 yellow single crochet stitch.*

Repeat everything between * and * 6 more times.

Finish the round as when you joined the ends: Pull the hook out of the loop, insert the hook from the wrong side, grab the loop, pull it to the wrong side, and make a yellow chain stitch. (98 stitches)

Steg 4

Round 3: *Make 3 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 3 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. Finish as before with a pink chain stitch. (98 stitches)

Round 4: *Make 1 pink single crochet stitch, change color. Make 3 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 1 yellow single crochet stitch, change color. Make 1 pink single crochet stitch, change color. Make 3 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 1 pink single crochet stitch, change color. Make 1 yellow single crochet stitch, change color. Make 1 pink single crochet stitch*. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. Make 1 pink single crochet stitch, change color. Make 2 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 3 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 yellow single crochet stitches*. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. Finish with 1 yellow chain stitch. (98 stitches)

Make 3 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 1 pink single crochet stitch, change color. Make 1 yellow single crochet stitch*. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. Finish with 1 yellow chain stitch. (98 stitches)

From here, repeat the pattern in height from Round 2 to Round 11 again — this pattern (Rounds 2 to 11) is repeated a total of 3 times vertically, resulting in 30 rounds of the pattern plus the first 2 yellow rows that form the base.

Rounds 32-33: Make 98 yellow single crochet stitches. Continue carrying the pink yarn so that the thickness remains consistent. (98 stitches) Finish as you would to prepare for a new round, and you will now see that the entire tube — the body of the bag — is complete. Time to cut and secure the yarn ends.

Steg 6

SHOULDER STRAP + BAG BOTTOM
The shoulder strap and the bag bottom will be crocheted as one complete piece. Just like with the body of the bag — the tube — this part will be crocheted in the round.

Decide the length of the shoulder strap. The bag in the pattern has a chain of 210 yellow chain stitches.

Round 1: Make 210 yellow chain stitches. (210)

Round 2: Make 209 yellow single crochet stitches. Don’t forget to carry/encapsulate the pink yarn in the same way as when we started the body of the bag — we want to maintain the thickness but also reduce the elasticity of the shoulder strap. (209)

Time to join the ends and create the base so you can crochet in the round. This is done the same way as when we created the body of the bag.

Rounds 3–5: Make 209 yellow single crochet stitches, with the first single crochet worked into the same stitch where you joined the ends. (209 stitches)

Finish the same way as if you were preparing for a new round. You should now have a completed tube for the bag’s body as well as a finished shoulder strap.

Time to cut and secure all the loose ends.

Steg 7

Assembly and Finishing

Mark and attach the shoulder strap (which also becomes part of the bag’s bottom) to the bag’s body using stitch markers or pins.

Choose whether you want to crochet or sew the shoulder strap in place. In this pattern, we have chosen to crochet the shoulder strap onto the bag.

Keep in mind not to get caught up counting every single stitch—trust your eye. You can choose to make a combination of single crochet stitches and slip stitches as in the pattern below—or just slip stitches. In this pattern, we chose to make a combination of single crochet and slip stitches.

Step 1: Make 44 single crochet stitches with the yellow yarn from one corner of the bag bottom to the other corner. (44 stitches)

Steg 8

Step 2: Make 33 slip stitches along one side of the shoulder strap and the bag’s body, all the way up to the top. Here, you need to tuck the entire yarn tube inside the bag’s body. (33 stitches)

If you’re unsure how to crochet slip stitches, see the video below.

Step 3: Make 5 slip stitches to attach the shoulder strap along the edge at the top of the bag.

Steg 9

Step 4: Make 33 slip stitches along the other side of the shoulder strap, all the way back down to the bag’s bottom.

Step 5: Make 44 single crochet stitches from one corner of the bag bottom to the other corner. Now the entire bag bottom is closed—remember to keep the yarn tube inside the bag. (44 stitches)

Step 6: Make 33 slip stitches along one side all the way up to the top of the bag. (33 stitches)

Step 7: Make 5 slip stitches to attach the shoulder strap along the edge at the top of the bag (just like you did on the other side). (5 stitches)

Step 8: Make 33 slip stitches along the other side of the shoulder strap, all the way back down to the bag’s bottom.

Step 9: Time to cut and secure the last loose ends.

Now the bag is finished!

THE TUBE (THE BAG’S “BODY”)
Round 0: Ch 99 yellow (99)

Before starting a new row, place the pink yarn over the yellow chains as we will lock/encapsulate and “carry” the pink yarn through the entire row. This is to maintain the same thickness throughout the project.

Round 1: Start in the 2nd yellow ch from the hook. Make 98 yellow sc — don’t forget to carry the pink yarn throughout the round and occasionally tighten it so it stays straight at all times.

The sc stitches have been worked in the back loop/bump of the ch, but it’s just as fine to work normally. (98 sts)

Time to join the ends to form a tube/ring. Make sure your work is straight, then bring the ends together. Remove the hook from the loop and insert it from the wrong side into the first yellow sc of the same row. Grab the loop you left behind and pull it to the wrong side. Make a ch with yellow yarn. Ready for Round 2.

When you start a new round, insert your hook directly into the sc stitch you used to join the ends. Use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round so you know exactly where the first sc of the next round should be.

Round 2: *Make 2 yellow sc, change color. Don’t forget to carry/encase the unused yarn. Make 2 pink sc, change color. Make 3 yellow sc, change color. Make 3 pink sc, change color. Make 2 yellow sc, change color. Make 1 pink sc, change color. Make 1 yellow sc*. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. End the round as when you joined the ends: remove the hook from the loop, insert the hook from the wrong side, grab the loop, pull it to the wrong side, and make 1 yellow ch. (98 sts)

Round 3: *Make 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 2 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc*. Repeat between *..* 6 more times. End with 1 pink ch. (98 sts)

Round 4: *Make 1 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 1 yellow sc, 1 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 1 pink sc, 1 yellow sc, 1 pink sc*. Repeat between *..* 6 more times. End with 1 pink ch. (98 sts)

Round 5: *Make 2 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 2 yellow sc*. Repeat 6 more times. End with 1 yellow ch. (98 sts)

Round 6: *Make 1 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 1 pink sc, 2 yellow sc, 3 pink sc, 2 yellow sc*. Repeat 6 more times. End with 1 yellow ch. (98 sts)

Round 7: *Make 1 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 1 pink sc, 2 yellow sc, 3 pink sc, 2 yellow sc*. Repeat 6 more times. End with 1 pink ch. (98 sts)

Round 8: *Make 2 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 2 yellow sc*. Repeat 6 more times. End with 1 pink ch. (98 sts)

Round 9: *Make 1 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 1 yellow sc, 1 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 1 pink sc, 1 yellow sc, 1 pink sc*. Repeat 6 more times. End with 1 yellow ch. (98 sts)

Round 10: *Make 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 2 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 2 pink sc*. Repeat 6 more times. End with 1 yellow ch. (98 sts)

Round 11: *Make 2 yellow sc, 2 pink sc, 3 yellow sc, 3 pink sc, 2 yellow sc, 1 pink sc, 1 yellow sc*. Repeat 6 more times. End with 1 yellow ch. (98 sts)

From here, repeat the pattern in height from Round 2 to Round 11 3 times total, which makes 30 rounds of pattern plus the first 2 initial yellow rows that set the base.

Rounds 32-33: Make 98 yellow sc. Continue carrying the pink yarn to maintain consistent thickness. (98 sts)
End as if preparing for a new round, and now you can see the whole tube — the body of the bag — is complete. Time to cut and weave in the ends.

STRAP + BAG BOTTOM
The strap and bag bottom will be crocheted as one complete piece. Just like the body of the bag (the tube), this part will be worked in the round. Decide the length of your strap. The bag in the pattern starts with a chain of 210 yellow ch.

Round 1: Ch 210 in yellow . (210)

Round 2: Make 209 yellow sc. Don’t forget to carry/encase the pink yarn the same way as when you started the bag’s body — this helps keep the thickness consistent and also reduces the stretchiness of the strap. (209)

Time to join the ends and create the base so you can crochet in the round. Do this the same way as you did when you made the bag’s body.

Rounds 3–5: Make 209 yellow sc, starting the first sc in the same stitch where you joined the ends.

Finish off the same way as if you were preparing for a new round. You should now have a completed tube for the bag’s body and a finished shoulder strap. Time to cut and weave in all loose ends.

Assembly and finishing: Mark and attach the shoulder strap (which also forms part of the bag’s bottom) to the bag’s body using stitch markers or pins. Choose whether you want to crochet or sew the strap in place. In this pattern, we’ve chosen to crochet the shoulder strap onto the body.

Keep in mind not to get too caught up counting every stitch—trust your eye! You can choose to crochet a combination of sc and sl st as shown in the pattern below, or just sl st if you prefer. In this pattern, we’ve chosen a mix of sc and sl st.

Step 1: Make 44 sc with the yellow yarn from one corner of the bag’s bottom to the other corner. (44)

Step 2: Make 33 sl st along one side of the strap and bag body, all the way up to the top. Here, you’ll need to tuck the entire yarn skein inside the bag body as you work.

Step 3: Make 5 sl st to secure the strap along the edge at the top of the bag.

Step 4: Make 33 sl st along the other side of the strap, all the way back down to the bottom of the bag. (33)

Step 5: Make 44 sc from one corner of the bag’s bottom to the other corner. (This closes the entire bag bottom — remember to keep the yarn ball inside the bag.) (44)

Step 6: Make 33 sl st along one side all the way up to the top of the bag. (33)

Step 7: Make 5 sl st to secure the strap along the edge at the top of the bag (just like you did on the other side). (5)
Step 8: Make 33 sl st along the other side of the strap, all the way back down to the bag’s bottom.
Step 9: Cut and weave in all remaining loose ends.

Now the bag is finished! 🎉

Finish the round (as before) with a pink chain stitch. (98 stitches)

Round 5: *Make 2 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 3 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 3 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 yellow single crochet stitches, change color*. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. Finish the round with 1 yellow chain stitch. (98 stitches)

Round 6: *Make 1 yellow single crochet stitch, change color. Make 2 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 3 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 1 pink single crochet stitch, change color. Make 2 yellow single crochet stitches, change color. Make 3 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 2 yellow single crochet stitches*. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. Finish with 1 yellow chain stitch. (98 stitches)

Round 7: * Make 1 yellow single crochet stitch, change color. Make 2 pink single crochet stitches, change color. Make 3 yellow single crochet stitches, change color.
