Crochet bag “Oksana”
Crochet a bag with a zigzag pattern
Crochet a spacious bag in a beautiful zigzag pattern. The bag is easy to make, and the only slightly challenging part is the color changes in the pattern section, but both images and instructions are provided as guidance. You will need EKO Nano Tube Yarn (we used Black & Nature White), a 5 mm and 6 mm crochet hook, stitch markers, scissors, and a large yarn needle. The finished bag measures approximately 41 cm in length, 29–31 cm in height (without handles), and 13 cm in width. Including the handles, the total height is about 50 cm.
Yarn Consumption: approx. 100 g of the contrast color and approx. 600 g of the main color.
Please note that this pattern includes videos from our technique library along with images.

Here's how to do it
The base of the bag is worked flat, but in the round as an oval shape, before transitioning into working the bag’s sides in a spiral (without clearly ending each round). We therefore recommend using a stitch marker to keep track of where each round begins and ends. Note that we do, however, properly finish each round when we reach the “pattern section” of the design (the black zigzag rows) — this will be demonstrated. /Michelle

BOTTOM OF THE BAG
Use a 5 mm crochet hook. This section is worked flat in the round as an oval. Make sure to leave a long tail (approx. 15–20 cm) before starting Round 1 — this will be used after Round 2. Work in your main color.
Round 1: Chain 15. Turn. You have a total of 15 stitches. If you are unsure how to crochet chains, see the video below (Chain).
Round 2: Work into the 2nd chain from the hook, 14 single crochets. You have a total of 14 stitches. If you are unsure how to crochet single crochets, see the video below (Single Crochet).
It’s time to start working in the round. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the rounds, as we will be crocheting in the round without closing each round.
Continue Round 2: Work 2 additional single crochets into the edge in the same stitch as the last single crochet. Continue with 13 single crochets. Make 1 more single crochet in the last stitch. You now have a total of 16 stitches.

Take a yarn needle and use the long tail you left at the beginning to close the hole in the center if you want it to be less visible. This can also be done after Round 9.

Round 3: Increase, 12 single crochets, increase x3, 12 single crochets, increase x2. You now have a total of 36 stitches. (An increase means working multiple stitches into the same stitch.)

Round 4: Increase, 13 single crochets, increase, 1 single crochet, increase, 1 single crochet, increase, 13 single crochets, increase, 1 single crochet, increase, 1 single crochet. You now have a total of 42 stitches.
Round 5: 2 single crochets, increase, 14 single crochets, increase, 2 single crochets, increase, 2 single crochets, increase, 14 single crochets, increase, 2 single crochets, increase. You now have a total of 48 stitches.

Round 6: Increase, 15 single crochets, increase, 3 single crochets, increase, 3 single crochets, increase, 15 single crochets, increase, 3 single crochets, increase, 3 single crochets. You now have a total of 54 stitches.
Round 7: 2 single crochets, increase, 16 single crochets, increase, 4 single crochets, increase, 4 single crochets, increase, 16 single crochets, increase, 4 single crochets, increase, 2 single crochets. You now have a total of 60 stitches.

Round 8: Increase, 17 single crochets, increase, 5 single crochets, increase, 5 single crochets, increase, 17 single crochets, increase, 5 single crochets, increase, 5 single crochets. You now have a total of 66 stitches.
Round 9: 3 single crochets, increase, 18 single crochets, increase, 6 single crochets, increase, 6 single crochets, increase, 18 single crochets, increase, 6 single crochets, increase, 3 single crochets. You now have a total of 72 stitches.

Change to a 6 mm crochet hook. Prepare for slip stitches as follows:
- Remove your hook and insert it into the first single crochet of the round from the back/inside of the bag’s base.

Pick up the loop you left on the front/outside and pull it through the stitch.

3) Turn so that the back/inside is facing you.

- You are ready for Round 10.
Round 10: 72 slip stitches. You have a total of 72 stitches. If you are unsure how to crochet slip stitches, see the video below.

Finish and prepare for single crochets as follows:
- When you have made the last slip stitch, remove your hook and insert it into the first slip stitch of the round.

2) Yarn over and pull up a loop.

- Turn your work so you can now work from the outside. Pick up the loose loop so that you have two loops on your hook.

4) Pull the first loop through the second loop.

5) You are now ready to start Round 1 of the bag’s sides.
BAG WALLS
Use a 6 mm crochet hook and continue with the white yarn. The rounds are worked continuously in a spiral and are not closed. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning/end of each round.
Round 1: 72 single crochets in the slip stitches. You have a total of 72 stitches.

Reminder: Do not finish the round. Start immediately with half double crochets in Round 2. Increases are made in the same type of stitch as the following stitch.
Round 2: Increase, 19 half double crochets, increase, 7 half double crochets, increase, 7 half double crochets, increase, 19 half double crochets, increase, 7 half double crochets, increase, 7 half double crochets. You now have a total of 78 stitches. If you are unsure how to crochet half double crochets, see the video below.

Round 3–Round 4: 78 half double crochets. You have a total of 78 stitches.
Round 5: 4 half double crochets, increase, 20 half double crochets, increase, 8 half double crochets, increase, 8 half double crochets, increase, 20 half double crochets, increase, 8 half double crochets, increase, 4 half double crochets. You now have a total of 84 stitches.

Round 8: Increase, 21 half double crochets, increase, 9 half double crochets, increase, 9 half double crochets, increase, 21 half double crochets, increase, 9 half double crochets, increase, 9 half double crochets. You now have a total of 90 stitches.
Round 9–Round 10: 90 half double crochets. You have a total of 90 stitches.
Round 11: 5 half double crochets, increase, 22 half double crochets, increase, 10 half double crochets, increase, 10 half double crochets, increase, 22 half double crochets, increase, 10 half double crochets, increase, 5 half double crochets. You now have a total of 96 stitches.

It’s time to add the black yarn, as we will now create the wave pattern. From here on, you will carry the non-active yarn. It is also time to properly finish each round. Follow these steps (images and text). If you prefer to watch a video, it is available at the bottom of this section.
- Remove your hook and insert it into the first half double crochet of the round from the inside of the bag.

2) Pull the loop through to the inside of the bag, remove the hook again, and insert it into the same half double crochet from the outside.

- Yarn over and pull up a loop, creating another loop on the hook.

4) Pull through the second loop so that you have two loops on your hook.

5) Yarn over and pull through both loops.

This is how we properly finish a round. Since we need to enclose the black yarn, go back to step 4 to position the black yarn in between.

6) After repeating step 5, make 1 chain stitch. This becomes the first half double crochet of your round.

To clarify: In Round 12, you will work 13 more white half double crochets before switching to the black yarn.
See the video below for how to finish and start a round.
Round 12:*14 white half double crochets, 2 black half double crochets*. Repeat the sequence between *...* a total of 6 times. Finish the round properly with the black yarn, as described earlier. You have a total of 96 stitches. If you are unsure how to change colors, see the video below.
With 2 black chain stitches on your hook, which form the first black half double crochet of Round 13, continue by making 1 additional half double crochet before switching back to the white yarn.

Round 13: *2 black half double crochets, 10 white half double crochets, 4 black half double crochets*. Repeat the sequence between *...* a total of 6 times. Finish with black yarn. You have a total of 96 stitches.

We continue to finish and start the rounds as described earlier: In Round 14, you will make 2 black chain stitches, which always count as the first half double crochet of the new round.

Round 14: *4 black half double crochets, 6 white half double crochets, 4 black half double crochets, 2 white half double crochets*. Repeat the sequence between *...* a total of 6 times. Finish with white yarn. You have a total of 96 stitches.

HANDLES
Mark where your sides are so that everything feels even.

There should be 48 single crochets on each side when measuring the two sides of the bag (my sides are marked with yellow stitch markers. The placement of the bag handles is marked with green stitch markers). You can choose how tight or wide your handle should be, as well as how long or short.
Round 25: Work 15 single crochets — this is 3 stitches before where I ended and started the new round.
Chain 45, skip 24 single crochets, work 24 single crochets, chain 45, skip 24 single crochets, work 9 single crochets.

Round 26–Round 28: 138 single crochets. You have a total of 138 stitches.

Finish the round and weave in all yarn ends. Done!

3) Yarn over and pull up a loop, creating another loop on the hook.

4) Pull through the second loop so that you have two loops on your hook.

- Yarn over and pull through both loops. This is how we properly finish a round. Since we need to enclose the black yarn, go back to step 4 to place the black yarn in between.

- After repeating step 5, make 1 ch. This becomes the first hdc of your round.
To clarify: In R12, you will make 13 more white hdc before switching to the black yarn.

HANDLES
Mark where your sides are so that everything feels even.

There should be 48 sc on each side when measuring the two sides of the bag (my sides are marked with yellow stitch markers. The placement of the bag handles is marked with green stitch markers). You can choose how tight or wide your handle should be, as well as how long or short.
R25: Work 15 sc — this is 3 sts before where I ended and started the new round. 45 ch, skip 24 sc, 24 sc, 45 ch, skip 24 sc, 9 sc.

Round 23–Round 24: 96 single crochets.

Done!
TIP! If you want to reinforce your handles, you can work single crochets all the way around. This will be approximately 72 single crochets, but don’t focus too much on the exact number—just make sure you reinforce evenly all the way around. – See Image 56, Image 57, Image 58, Image 59 & Image 60.
You’re done!

PATTERN (US TERMS ABBREVIATIONS)
If you are unsure about any part of the pattern, please refer to the beginner section with additional images and videos for guidance.
Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
inc = increase (2 sts in same st, place in the same stitch as the next stitch after the increase)
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
st = stitch
(...) = total stitch count per round
*…* = repeat instructions within *…*
BAG BOTTOM
Use black tube yarn and a 5 mm crochet hook. This section is worked flat in the round as an oval. Leave a long tail (approx. 15–20 cm) before starting R1 — this will be used after R2.
R1: ch 15, turn. (15)
R2: sc in 2nd ch from hook, 14 sc. (14)
It is now time to work in the round. Use a stitch marker to keep track of rounds, as we will not join rounds with a slip stitch.
Cont. R2: 2 sc in the same st as the last sc, 13 sc, 1 sc in last st. (16)
Use a yarn needle and the long starting tail to close the center hole if desired. This can also be done after R9.
R3: inc, 12 sc, inc x3, 12 sc, inc x2. (36)
R4: inc, 13 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 13 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 1 sc. (42)
R5: 2 sc, inc, 14 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 14 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc. (48)

R9: 3 sc, inc, 18 sc, inc, 6 sc, inc, 6 sc, inc, 18 sc, inc, 6 sc, inc, 3 sc. (72)

Switch to a 6 mm crochet hook. Prepare for slip stitches as follows:
- Remove your hook and insert it into the first sc of the round from the back/inside of the bag base.
- Pick up the loop you left on the front/outside and pull it through the stitch.

3) Turn your work so that the back/inside is facing you.

- You are ready for Round 10.
R10: 72 sl st. (72)

Finish and prepare for sc as follows:
- When you have made the last sl st, remove your hook and insert it into the first sl st of the round.

2) Yarn over and pull up a loop.

3) Turn your work so you can now work from the outside. Catch the loose loop so that you have two loops on your hook.

BAG BODY
Use a 6 mm crochet hook and continue with the white yarn. The rounds are worked continuously in a spiral and are not closed. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning/end of each round.
R1: 72 sc in sl sts. (72)
Reminder: Do not finish the round—start immediately with half double crochet in R2.

It’s time to add the black yarn, as we will now create the wave pattern. From here on, you will carry the non-active yarn. It is also time to properly finish each round. Follow these steps:
- Remove your hook and insert it into the first hdc of the round from the inside of the bag.

2) Pull the loop through to the inside of the bag, remove your hook again, and insert it into the same hdc from the outside.

R12: *14 white hdc, 2 black hdc* x6. Finish the round properly with black yarn, as described earlier. (96)
With 2 black ch on your hook, which form the first black hdc of Round 13, continue by making 1 additional hdc before switching to white yarn.
R13: *2 black hdc, 10 white hdc, 4 black hdc* x6. Finish with black yarn. (96)
We then continue finishing and starting rounds as previously described: In R14, you will make 2 black ch, which always counts as the first hdc of the new round.

R14: *4 black hdc, 6 white hdc, 4 black hdc, 2 white hdc* x6. Finish with white yarn. (96)
R15: *2 white hdc, 4 black hdc, 2 white hdc, 4 black hdc, 4 white hdc* x6. Finish with white yarn. (96)
R16: *4 white hdc, 6 black hdc, 4 white hdc, 2 black hdc* x6. Finish with black yarn. (96)

R17: *2 black hdc, 4 white hdc, 2 black hdc, 4 white hdc, 2 black hdc* x6. Finish with black yarn. (96)
R18: *4 black hdc, 6 white hdc, 4 black hdc, 2 white hdc* x6. Finish with white yarn. (96)
R19: *2 white hdc, 4 black hdc, 2 white hdc, 4 black hdc, 4 white hdc* x6. Finish with white yarn. (96)

R20: *4 white hdc, 6 black hdc, 6 white hdc* x6. Finish with white yarn. (96)
R21: *6 white hdc, 2 black hdc, 8 white hdc* x6. Finish with white yarn. (96)

Drop the black yarn.
R22: 96 white hdc. (96)
R23–R24: 96 sc. (96)

R26–R28: 138 sc. (138)

Finish the round and weave in all yarn ends. Done!
TIP! If you want to reinforce your handles, you can work single crochets all the way around. This will be approximately 72 sc, but don’t focus too much on the exact number—just make sure you reinforce all the way around evenly.
