Crochet bag “Juliette”
Crochet a beautiful bag with wooden handles
This lovely bag is suitable for both beginners and experienced crocheters. The handles can be a small challenge, but there are both pictures and videos to guide you. The result is an elegant bag perfect for all the best occasions! You will need two colors of EKO Nano (we used Graphite Blue and Greige), a 6 mm crochet hook, two wooden handles, stitch markers, and a large yarn needle. The bag will measure approximately 28 cm wide, 25 cm high, and 18 cm deep.
Yarn Consumption: Approximately 420 g of the main color and 140 g of the second color. Yarn consumption may vary depending on how tightly you crochet.
Please note that in this tutorial, we use videos from our technique library along with pictures.

This is what you need:

Here's how to do it
The bag is crocheted flat, and all parts are assembled at the end. The pattern uses two wooden handles, which are partially sewn on. The stitches used are either single crochets or slip stitches. Challenges in this pattern are: Keeping track of the two yarn balls you’re juggling throughout the pattern so they don’t get tangled with each other. Remembering to carry the “inactive yarn” along. Changing the yarn before finishing the last single crochet of the color in use. Attaching the wooden handles (but there are photos and videos for guidance). / Michelle

Bag pattern pieces – make 2
These two pieces are crocheted flat, see below. In the pattern, blue will be used as the main color and gray-white as the second color.

Round 0: Start by making a chain of 36 blue chain stitches. You will have a total of 36 stitches. If you are unsure how to crochet a chain, see the video below.
Row 1: Insert the hook into the second stitch from the hook and crochet 35 blue single crochets in the back loops of the stitches – carry the gray-white yarn along (see the video below, first row of carrying yarn, if you’re unsure about this step). Finish with a blue chain stitch. Turn. You will have a total of 36 stitches in the row.
If you are unsure how to crochet single crochets, see the video below.

From now on, you should always have 36 stitches in your rows. This applies until stated otherwise.
Row 3: Crochet 3 blue single crochets. Then crochet 3 gray-white single crochets. Continue with 1 blue single crochet, then 5 gray-white single crochets followed by 1 blue single crochet. Crochet 3 gray-white single crochets and 3 blue single crochets. Crochet 3 gray-white single crochets and 1 blue single crochet. Then 5 gray-white single crochets and 1 blue single crochet. Finish with 3 gray-white single crochets and 3 blue single crochets.
From now on, we will finish each row by inserting the hook into the last stitch as usual and also into the yarn that runs along the side edge. See the video (Straight Side Edges with Single Crochets) if you are unsure about this step. Finish with 1 gray-white chain stitch.

Row 23:
On Row 23, the handle is attached. Crochet 4 gray-white single crochets, 1 blue single crochet, 3 gray-white single crochets, 2 blue single crochets. Attach the handle: make 15 blue single crochets through the handle so that it is secured and crocheted in. Make 2 blue single crochets, 3 gray-white single crochets, 1 blue single crochet, 4 gray-white single crochets. If you are unsure how to crochet in the handle, see the video below (Attaching handles with Crochet).
Finish with 1 gray-white chain stitch. Turn.

Rotate the handle into the correct position so that it sits properly. If you are unsure how to do this, see the video below (Tuning handles when attached).

Now you will start crocheting the sides next to the handle. The handle is not crocheted into the sides at this stage; it will be attached later. First, crochet one side, and then the other.
Row 24: Crochet 1 gray-white single crochet, 1 blue single crochet, 5 gray-white single crochets, 4 blue single crochets. Finish with 1 blue chain stitch. Turn. You should now have 12 stitches on the row.
Row 25: Crochet 5 blue single crochets, 1 gray-white single crochet, 1 blue single crochet, 1 gray-white single crochet, 3 blue single crochets. Finish with 1 blue chain stitch. Turn. You should now have 12 stitches on the row.
Row 26: Crochet 11 blue single crochets. Finish with 1 blue chain stitch. Pull the loop out approximately 60 cm to sew the handle in place. Cut the yarn from the skein and thread it onto a tapestry needle. Sew the first side of the handle – see the videos below (Attaching the sides of the handle & showing the attached handles).
For the other side of the handle, repeat from Row 24. Start with a slipknot at the edge of the bag piece and then crochet inward toward the handle.

Bag Bottom
Row 0: Make 36 blue chain stitches. The total number of stitches in each row of the bag bottom should be 36.
Row 1: Make 35 blue single crochets into the back loop of the chain stitches. Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 2: Make 1 single crochet, then 33 slip stitches, 1 single crochet, and finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.

Row 3:
Make 35 single crochets. The last single crochet should also go through the yarn that runs along the side edge (this is done on all subsequent rows of the bottom piece).
Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.

Row 4: Make 1 single crochet, then 33 slip stitches, 1 single crochet (don’t forget to work into the yarn along the side edge as well), and finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 5: Make 35 single crochets into the slip stitches (don’t forget the yarn along the side edge when working the last single crochet). Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 6: Make 1 single crochet, then 33 slip stitches, 1 single crochet (don’t forget the yarn along the side edge), and finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 7: Make 35 single crochets into the slip stitches (don’t forget the yarn along the side edge when working the last single crochet). Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Note: Don’t worry if it looks a little uneven – see Video 07. You can gently pull on the crocheted piece to straighten it out, but if you want to ensure it is perfectly straight, it is recommended to block this piece after completing all rows – wet it, stretch it, and let it dry. See the video below to see how we gently stretch the bottom of the bag (Showing how to stretch the bottom of the bag).
You can decide how wide you want the bag to be, but keep in mind that the sides should later match the width of the bag's bottom.

Row 8: 1 single crochet, then 33 slip stitches, 1 single crochet, and finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 9: 35 single crochets into the slip stitches. Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 10: 1 single crochet, then 33 slip stitches, 1 single crochet, and finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 11: 35 single crochets into the slip stitches. Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 12: 1 single crochet, then 33 slip stitches, 1 single crochet, and finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 13: 35 single crochets into the slip stitches. Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 14: 1 single crochet, then 33 slip stitches, 1 single crochet, and finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 15: 35 single crochets into the slip stitches. Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 16: 1 single crochet, then 33 slip stitches, 1 single crochet, and finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 17: 35 single crochets into the slip stitches. Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 18: 1 single crochet, then 33 slip stitches, 1 single crochet, and finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Row 19: 35 single crochets into the slip stitches. Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Make slip stitches all around the edge of the bag bottom. This will be 18 slip stitches on the short sides and 35 slip stitches on each long side. Set the bottom piece aside—it’s time to start the sides.

Bag Sides – Make 2 pieces
Row 0: Make 19 blue chain stitches. You should have 18 single crochets on all rows of the sides.
Row 1: Make 18 blue single crochets into the back loop of the chain stitches. Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn.
Rows 2–27: Make 18 single crochets. Finish with 1 chain stitch. Turn. A total of 26 rows.
The idea is that the height should match the pattern sides. If you want to make one row more or less, it’s up to you. This may vary depending on how tightly you crochet.
Once you have completed one side piece, make a second one.

ASSEMBLY
Now you will crochet the bag bottom together with the sides. A helpful tip is to use stitch markers and align the short side of the sides with the short side of the bottom. I chose to join these using the slip stitches that we made on the bag bottom. Crochet slip stitches through both pieces. Repeat on both short sides of the bottom.

Next, it’s time to crochet the front and back pieces (the sides with the handles) onto the bottom. I use stitch markers to get an idea of how it will look.

Next, I crochet the bag bottom and the bag sides together using single crochets.

The pattern pieces are crocheted on separately. There will be approximately 26 single crochets on the sides of the pattern piece and 35 single crochets when attaching one long side of the bag bottom. This makes about 87 single crochets in total on each pattern side. Weave in the loose ends. Done!

Crochet Terms
This is the version with crochet terms. You can always go back to the simple version if you need help and see more pictures and videos along the way.
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- (...) = indicates the number of stitches in that row
- *...* = Everything inside *...* is repeated the number of times indicated

Row 18: 1 sc, 33 sl st, 1 sc, finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 19: Work 35 sc in the sl st. Finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Make sl st around the entire edge of the bag bottom. This will be 18 sl st on the short sides and 35 sl st on each long side. Set aside; it’s time to work on the sides.

Bag Sides – Make 2
Row 0: Chain 19 (19)
Row 1: Work 18 sc in the back loop of the chains. Finish with 1 ch. Turn. (19)
Rows 2–27: Work 18 sc in each row. Finish each row with 1 ch. Turn. (19)
The length should match the pattern sides. You can adjust by adding or removing a row depending on your tension. Once you’ve completed one side piece, make a second one.

ASSEMBLY
Now you will crochet the bag bottom together with the sides. Align the short sides of the bottom with the short sides of the side pieces and secure them with stitch markers.

I chose to join these pieces using the slip stitches.

Next, it’s time to crochet the patterned sides onto the bag. I use stitch markers to get an idea of how it will look.

Next, I crochet the bag bottom and the sides together using single crochets, working from one edge of a pattern piece to the other.
The patterned pieces are worked separately and then attached. There are approximately 26 single crochets along the sides of each pattern piece and 35 single crochets when attaching the long side of the bag bottom. This makes about 87 single crochets in total on each patterned side. Weave in the loose ends. Done!

Note: Don’t worry if it looks a bit uneven. See Video 07. You can gently stretch the crocheted fabric to even it out. If you want it perfectly straight, it’s recommended to block this piece after completing all rows—wet it, stretch it into shape, and let it dry.
You can decide the width of the bag yourself, but keep in mind that the sides need to match the width of the bag bottom.

Row 8: 1 sc, 33 sl st, 1 sc, finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 9: Work 35 sc in the sl st. Finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 10: 1 sc, 33 sl st, 1 sc, finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 11: Work 35 sc in the sl st. Finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 12: 1 sc, 33 sl st, 1 sc, finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 13: Work 35 sc in the sl st. Finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 14: 1 sc, 33 sl st, 1 sc, finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 15: Work 35 sc in the sl st. Finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 16: 1 sc, 33 sl st, 1 sc, finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)
Row 17: Work 35 sc in the sl st. Finish with 1 ch. Turn. (36)

Done!
