Here's how to do it

This small bag is crocheted with two “African Flower” squares. One square weighs about 50g (see step 1 for more details). The shoulder strap is crocheted in one row of the “star stitch” technique, which is one of my favorite techniques so I hope you like this look too! /Lizette

Steg 1

Weight

If you want to use some left over yarn you have at home, you can see below what the weight is on each color:

Weight of square: about 50g

Round 1: 4g

Rounds 2 & 3: 22g

Row 4:9 g

Round 5: 11g

Yarn Consumption depends on how tight you crochet.

Steg 2

“African flower” square

Crochet two squares.

The inner/magic ring:
Hold the yarn in your left hand. Twist the yarn around your fingers (left hand) three times. Use your crochet hook to go under the first two loops and hook the third with your crochet hook. Pick up the yarn again and pull under the two loops, hook the yarn on the crochet hook and pull through. Now the loop on your crochet hook holds together the double “inner ring” and you can proceed below.

Round 1:

Start with color 1. Chain two (this chain replaces the first double crochet). A chain stitch is crocheted by taking the yarn over your crochet hook and pulling through. Then crochet a double crochet in the inner ring. A double crochet is crocheted by taking the yarn over the crochet hook, going down with your crochet hook into the inner ring, pick up the yarn and pull through (you now have three loops on your crochet hook), pick up yarn and pull through two loops, pick up yarn again and pull through the last two loops. You have now crocheted a double crochet. Now you have crocheted a chain (which counts as a double crochet) and a double crochet. After this, chain one.

Crochet two double crochets and then chain one. Repeat until you crochet this sequence a total of 6 times.

Finish by going down the third chain from the chain you made at the beginning. Pick up the yarn and pull through both loops directly. Leave 10 cm of yarn end and cut off.

Steg 3

Round 2

Use color 2. Lay the yarn as a U-shape and pull through into a “hole”. A hole is where you made your chain stitches between the double crochets on the previous round.

Chain two (replacing the first double crochet). Go down the same hole again and crochet a double crochet. After you have crocheted two double crochets in the same hole, chain one. Then crochet two more double crochets into the same hole and then, chain one. Thus, you should crochet two double crochets, chain one, two double crochets, chain one in the same hole. Do this in all six holes.

In the pattern, the same color is used for round 3, if you want a different color for round 3, cut the yarn and start with your new color in the same way as you did in round 2. Where to start round 3, see next step.

Steg 4

Round 3

If you use the same color, make a slip stitch in the “hole” between the two pairs of double crochets (the pairs of double crochets that were crocheted in the same hole from round 1). A slip stitch is crocheted by going down the hole, picking up yarn and pulling through all loops straight away. We do this to end up in the right place to start round 3. If you have changed color, you start here, you do not need to make the slip stitch.

In this hole, we start by chaining two. Then six double crochets which are crocheted in the same hole. When you're done, you'll have six double crochets plus the chain. Chain one. Go down into the next hole (which is between thedouble crochets) and crochet seven double crochets. Continue the same in all six holes.

Finish by going down the second chain from the chain you made in the beginning. Pick up yarn and pull through both loops directly. Leave 10 cm of yarn end and cut off.

Steg 5

Round 4

Use color 3. Tie the yarn into a hole on row 2, that is between the double crochets (between the seven double crochets one row down). Tie the yarn and chain two. Crochet seven single crochets in the seven double crochets from the previous round. Between the seven double crochets on the previous round, crochet a double crochet but go down on round 2 instead of round 3. This creates a longer double crochet, marking the flower petals. Continue until you arr back at the start.

Finish by going down the second chain from the chain you made at the beginning. Pick up yarn and pull through both loops directly. Leave 10 cm of yarn end and cut off.

Steg 6

Round 5

Use color 1. Lay the yarn as a U-shape and pull through into a stitch. The important thing to keep in mind here is that we are going to make an increase (two single crochets in the same stitch) at the top of each petal, that is, in the stitch that is above the middle double crochet of the seven that were crocheted on round 3. It doesn't matter where you start as long as you make an increase on the top stitch of each petal.

Crochet single crochets until you get to the top stitch on the flower petals. There, crochet one single crochet, chain one, one single crochet in the same stitch. Continue until you are back where you started.

Finish by going down the second loop from the loops you made at the beginning. Pick up yarn and pull through both loops directly. Leave 10 cm of yarn end and cut off.

Attach all the yarn tails by bringing all the yarn tails to the back of the square and tie them together (or tie the yarn tail around a stitch on the back). Hide the yarn tails under close by stitches.

Steg 7

Attach the squares together

After you have crocheted your two squares, we will attach them together. Use color 1. Lay the yarn as a U-shape and pull through into a stitch. Start in a stitch over where you made a long double crochet on round 4. Crochet single crochets, through both squares, until you have crocheted around four petals. You should have two petals that are not attached with each other. Cut the yarn and attach the yarn ends as we did on the squares.

Steg 8

Shoulder strap

The shoulder strap is crocheted using the first row in the “star stitch” technique.

Start by crocheting a chain. Crochet as long as you wish the shoulder strap but keep in mind that the strap will end up a bit shorter that the chain that you made. Chain an even number of loops.

Start crocheting your chain by making a loop around the crochet hook. One way you can do this is to wrap the yarn around your index and middle finger and then pull the yarn up so that it creates a loop when you tighten. Then crochet loops, pick up yarn and pull through.

Reference: in the video we chained 84 and it will be quite a short strap.

When you are satisfied with the length of your shoulder strap, chain one and turn, we will crochet back to where we started.

Steg 9

Let's start crocheting the technique “star stitches”. We will use the first row of the technique.

Go down the second stitch (skip the stitch closest to the crochet hook) and pick up yarn, pull the loop a little so it is not tight. You have two loops on your crochet hook. Go down into the next four chain stitches and pick up yarn in the same way. You have six loops on your crochet hook. Pick up the yarn again and pull through all loops. Chain one.

Now we're going to do the next star. This is how you will continue until you have crocheted the entire shoulder strap.

1. Go down into the little hole (eye of the star) that was created after you chained one. Pick up the yarn and pull though so you have two loops on your hook.

2. Go down the stitch between the one you just went down into and the loop on the chain, pick up yarn and pull through. you have three loops on your hook.

3. Go down the next three stitches on the chain and pick up yarn in the same way. You have six stitches on the crochet hook.

4. Pick up the yarn again and pull through all loops.

5. Chain one.

Continue until you are done.

Cut the yarn, leaving a yarn end of about 20 cm.

Steg 10

Attach the shoulder strap to the bag

Make sure that the nice side of the strap is out. Attach the strap with the yarn tail we left in the step above. Pull the end of the yarn up and down between the bag and the shoulder strap to fasten the strap. Then bring the yarn tail to the inside of the bag and attach both yarn tails.

Cut a piece of yarn and attach the other side of the shoulder strap to the bag, then fasten the yarn. Be sure to check that the shoulder strap is not twisted.

Now your bag is ready :)
