Steg 1

We’ll start by crocheting the top of the hat. We’ve chosen to use 3 colors and change color for each round (except at the beginning). However, it's completely up to you how often – or whether – you want to change colors.

The hat is crocheted in a spiral.

Start with your first color.

Round 1: Crochet 8 single crochets into a magic ring. If you're unsure how to do this, see the video below.

Round 2: Crochet 2 single crochets in each stitch around. You should now have a total of 16 stitches in the round. If you're unsure how to change color, see the video below.

Change color in the last yarn over of the last stitch.
Steg 2

Continue increasing with single crochets in each round until the hat fits you well. Try it on as you go and stop increasing when you’re happy with the size. From now on, change color every round.

Round 3: Work 2 single crochets in the same stitch every other stitch. Between increases, work 1 single crochet in the next stitch. Change color in the last yarn over of the final stitch. You should now have 24 stitches in total.

Change color in the last stitch by pulling through the new color on the final yarn over.

Round 4: Crochet 2 single crochets into every third stitch. In between, crochet 1 single crochet in each stitch. Change color in the last stitch by pulling through the new color on the final yarn over. You should have a total of 32 stitches in the round.

Round 5: Crochet 2 single crochets into every fourth stitch. In between, crochet 1 single crochet in each stitch. Change color in the last stitch by pulling through the new color on the final yarn over. You should have a total of 40 stitches in the round.

Round 6: Crochet 2 single crochets into every fifth stitch. In between, crochet 1 single crochet in each of the other stitches. Change color in the last stitch by pulling through the new color on the final yarn over. You should have a total of 48 stitches in the round.

Round 7: Crochet 2 single crochets into every sixth stitch. Between these, crochet 1 single crochet in each stitch. Change color when working the last stitch. You should have a total of 56 stitches in the round.

For reference, we started crocheting the side of the hat after Round 7. Measure on yourself and add more rounds (below) with increases if needed. When you’re happy with the size, start crocheting the side of the hat.

Round 8: Crochet 2 single crochets in every 7th stitch. Between these, crochet 1 single crochet in each stitch. Change color on the last stitch of the round. You should have 64 stitches.

Round 9: Crochet 2 single crochets in every 8th stitch. Between these, crochet 1 single crochet in each stitch. Change color in the last stitch. You should have 72 stitches.

Continue the same pattern for as many rounds as you want to make the hat bigger. The number of stitches after each round will be: 80, 88, 96, 104, 112, ...

Steg 3

The side of the hat

Continue changing color every round.

Rounds 9–19: Crochet 1 single crochet in each stitch, no increases. Crochet as many rounds as you like. Each round will have the same number of stitches. For reference, we crocheted 11 rounds on the side of the hat.

Steg 4

The Brim

Round 1: Crochet the first round of the brim only in the front loops. Make 1 single crochet in each stitch. If you’re unsure how to crochet in front loops only, see the video below.

Round 2: Now we will increase the stitch count. Make an increase (two single crochets in the same stitch) in every fourth stitch. It doesn’t have to be exact.

Rounds 3–5: Crochet one stitch in each stitch until you are happy with the size.

You are done!
