Crochet Clutch "Holly"
Beautiful Clutch in Granny Stripes
This is a fun and flexible pattern that creates incredibly cute clutch bags! You can easily adjust the size depending on which handle you choose. The pattern explains how to make a round, square, or rectangular bag base. Choose to crochet in a single color or combine two—or why not several? The choice is yours! You will need Cotton Cloud yarn (we have used the colors Rusty Yellow and Light Yellow), a 3.5 mm crochet hook, a metal clutch frame (we have used a rounded metal handle measuring 23 cm and a straight metal handle measuring 16 cm), stitch markers, scissors, and a larger crochet hook. The finished small clutch measures approximately 22–23 cm wide and 18–19 cm high.
Yarn Consumption: Small clutch: approx. 150 g in total (approx. 85 g of the main color and 60 g of the contrast color). Large clutch: approx. 250 g in total (approx. 160 g of the main color and 90 g of the contrast color).

Here's how to do it
For a beginner, the granny stitches may be something new, but otherwise the pattern should feel familiar. A slightly more challenging part can be attaching the bag body to the metal handle, as the first single crochet stitches can be tricky to work when the handle is loose. In the pattern, I show you how to stabilize it using a piece of yarn. The pattern also briefly explains how to approach adjusting the size if you would like to make the bag larger or smaller. / Michelle

INFO – Bag Base
If you would like to adjust the size: You can choose to make a rectangular, square, or round bag base—the small bag is made with a rectangular base, while the large bag is made with a round base. A general rule is to make the bag base wide enough to reach, or almost reach, the sides of the metal handle.
If you want to work granny stitches, the number of stitches must be divisible by 3. For every 3 stitches, 1 consists of a cluster of 3 double crochets (= a granny stitch), followed by 2 stitches between each cluster. This applies to the first row of granny stitches; from then on, granny stitches are worked in the spaces between the granny stitches of the previous row.
You can also adjust the height of the bag as desired by repeating the rows until you are happy with the size.
This applies to all sizes and metal handles: Start by wrapping the yarn around your metal handle. In this pattern, the “Rounded Clutch Handle 23 cm” is used for the larger bag, and the “Clutch Handle 16 cm” is used for the smaller bag.
Use the main color, which in the pattern example is Rusty Yellow. Cut the yarn, tie a knot if you wish to secure it, and set the handle aside.

SMALL CLUTCH BAG (rectangular base). The large/round clutch is covered in steps 6–8.
Crochet the rectangle/square to the size of the open clutch handle.
Take your main color, Rusty Yellow, and a 3.5 mm crochet hook. You will now crochet back and forth to create a rectangular bag base.
Row 0: 31 chain stitches. Turn.
If you are unsure how to crochet a chain, see the video below.
Insert your hook into the back loop (the back “bumps”) of the second stitch from the hook.

Rows 1–24: Crochet 30 single crochet stitches, starting in the second stitch from the hook (skip the first stitch closest to the hook). Chain 1. Turn. You should have 30 stitches in total.
If you are unsure how to crochet single crochet stitches, see the video below.

It’s time to start crocheting the walls of the bag (= the body), working in the round like a tube along the edges of the bag base. Please note that the final slip stitch is not included in the total stitch count shown in parentheses at the end of each completed round.
Round 1: Work the first single crochet directly into the same stitch where you finished Row 24.

Work single crochet stitches until you reach the next corner (we worked 24 single crochet stitches to reach the next corner).
Then work 30 single crochet stitches (or as many as needed) along the next long side, starting directly in your most recent single crochet stitch on the short side (each corner has 2 single crochet stitches).

Then work 24 single crochet stitches along the second short side (or the same number of stitches as you worked along the first short side), as described above.
Finish the round with 30 single crochet stitches (or the same number as you worked along the first long side), remembering to start directly in the most recent single crochet stitch on the short side.
Finish with 1 slip stitch. (108)

From now on, you will work granny stitches, which consist of a cluster of three double crochets. If you are unsure how to crochet a double crochet, see the video below.
Round 2 – Rusty Yellow: Chain 3. Work 2 double crochets into the same stitch (this forms your first cluster, i.e. your first granny stitch). Skip 2 stitches, then work 3 double crochets into the same stitch. Repeat around.
Finish with 1 slip stitch into the third chain stitch you made at the beginning of the round.

The unused color is dropped and “rests.”

Round 3 – Light Yellow: Chain 3. Then begin the next cluster directly by working 3 double crochets into the next space. Repeat these granny stitch clusters all the way around.
Work 2 double crochets into the same space where you started the round, and finish with 1 slip stitch into the last chain stitch.

Repeat Round 2 and Round 3 until you reach your desired height. Finish with Round 2 (Rusty Yellow).
In this pattern, the bag has 10 rounds of Rusty Yellow and 9 rounds of Light Yellow.

From now on, use only your main color. Cut the Light Yellow yarn, leaving a tail.
Round 21: Work 1 single crochet in each stitch around. In this pattern, we worked 108 single crochet stitches. Finish with 1 slip stitch. (108)

It’s time to attach the handle along the opening of the bag. See the video below.
Use stitch markers and cut pieces of yarn (preferably in a contrasting color) to mark the corners.

We chose to follow the same stitch distribution as at the beginning when creating the bag base: 24 stitches along the short sides and 30 stitches along the long sides. The most important thing is that the stitches are evenly distributed on all sides.
It is now time to work single crochet stitches around the handle, all the way around. Before you begin, make sure the loop is on the inside and that the strand of yarn you are picking up stitches from is on the outside.

Then insert your hook into the next stitch, pick up the yarn, pull it through, pick up the yarn again, and pull it through. Continue all the way around the opening.

Distribute your stitches as evenly as possible so that the single crochet stitches are balanced evenly all the way around.
Finish by cutting the yarn and weaving in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.
Done!

You can also adjust the height of the bag as desired by repeating the rounds until you are happy with the size.
LET’S GET STARTED
This applies to all sizes and metal handles: Start by wrapping the yarn around your metal handle. In this pattern, the “Rounded Clutch Handle 23 cm” is used for the larger bag, and the “Clutch Handle 16 cm” is used for the smaller bag.
Use the main color, which in the pattern example is Rusty Yellow. Cut the yarn, tie a knot if you wish to secure it, and set the handle aside.

SMALL CLUTCH BAG (rectangular base)
Your crocheted rectangle should be the same size as an opened clutch handle. You can easily add or remove chain stitches from R0.
Take your main color, Rusty Yellow, and a 3.5 mm crochet hook. We will now crochet back and forth to create a rectangular bag base.
R0: Ch 31. Turn. (31)
Insert your hook into the back bump of the second st from the hook.

R1–R24: 30 sc, ch 1, turn. (31)

It’s time to start crocheting the walls of the bag (= the bag body), working in the round like a tube along the edges of the bag base. Note that the final sl st is not included in the total stitch count shown in parentheses at the end of each completed round.
R1: Work the first sc directly into the same st where you finished Row 24. Work sc to the next corner, then work along the long side, starting in the same st you just finished in. This creates 2 sc in the same st at each corner. Repeat around. Finish with 1 sl st. (108)

From now on, we will work granny stitches, which consist of a cluster of three double crochets.
R2 – Rusty Yellow: Ch 3. Work 2 dc in the same st (this forms your first cluster, i.e. your first granny stitch). Skip 2 sts, work 3 dc in the same st. Repeat around. Finish with 1 sl st in the third ch from the beginning of the round.

The unused color is dropped and “rests.”
R3 – Light Yellow: Ch 3. Begin the next cluster directly by working 3 dc in the next space. Repeat these granny stitch clusters around. Work 2 dc in the same space where you started the round and finish with 1 sl st in the last ch.

Repeat R2 and R3 until you reach your desired height. Finish with R2 (Rusty Yellow). In this pattern, the bag has 10 rounds of Rusty Yellow and 9 rounds of Light Yellow.
From now on, use only your main color. Cut the Light Yellow yarn, leaving a tail.
R21: 108 sc, finish with 1 sl st. (108)

It’s time to attach the handle along the opening of the bag.
Use stitch markers and cut pieces of yarn (preferably in a contrasting color) to mark the corners. We chose to follow the same stitch distribution as at the beginning when creating the bag base: 24 sts along the short sides and 30 sts along the long sides.

From now on, we will work granny stitches, which consist of a cluster of three double crochets.
R23 – Rusty Yellow: Ch 3. Work 2 dc in the same st (this forms your first cluster, i.e. your first granny stitch). Skip 2 sts, work 3 dc in the same st. Repeat around. Finish with 1 sl st in the third ch from the beginning of the round.

The unused color is dropped and “rests.”
R24 – Light Yellow: Ch 3. Begin the next cluster directly by working 3 dc in the next space. Repeat these granny stitch clusters around. Work 2 dc in the same space where you started the round and finish with 1 sl st in the last ch.

Repeat R23 and R24 until you reach your desired height. Finish with R23 (Rusty Yellow). In this pattern, the bag has 16 rounds of Rusty Yellow and 15 rounds of Light Yellow.
From now on, use only your main color. Cut the Light Yellow yarn, leaving a tail.

It’s time to attach the handle along the opening of the bag. Use stitch markers and cut pieces of yarn (preferably in a contrasting color) to mark the “corners.”
It is now time to work sc around the handle, all the way around. Before you begin, make sure the loop is on the inside and that the strand of yarn you are picking up stitches from is on the outside (just as with the small clutch bag).
Then insert your hook into the next st, pick up the yarn, pull it through, yarn over, and pull through. Continue all the way around the opening.
Distribute your stitches as evenly as possible so that the sc are balanced evenly all the way around.

Finish by cutting the yarn and weaving in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.

Round 23 – Rusty Yellow: Chain 3.

Round 24 – Light Yellow: Chain 3. Then begin the next cluster directly by working 3 double crochets into the next space. Repeat these granny stitch clusters all the way around.
Work 2 double crochets into the same space where you started the round, and finish with 1 slip stitch into the last chain stitch.

Repeat Round 23 and Round 24 until you reach your desired height. Finish with Round 23 (Rusty Yellow).
In this pattern, the bag has 16 rounds of Rusty Yellow and 15 rounds of Light Yellow.

From now on, use only your main color. Cut the Light Yellow yarn, leaving a tail.
Rounds 54–55: Work 1 single crochet in each stitch around. In this pattern, we worked 138 single crochet stitches. Finish with 1 slip stitch. (138)

It’s time to attach the handle along the opening of the bag.
Use stitch markers and cut pieces of yarn (preferably in a contrasting color) to mark the “corners.”

Distribute your stitches as evenly as possible so that the single crochet stitches are evenly balanced all the way around.
Finish by cutting the yarn and weaving in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.

Done!

INFO
If you would like to adjust the size: You can choose to make a rectangular, square, or round bag base—the small bag is made with a rectangular base, while the large bag is made with a round base. A general rule is to make the bag base wide enough to reach, or almost reach, the sides of the metal handle.
If you want to work granny stitches, the number of stitches must be divisible by 3. For every 3 stitches, 1 consists of a cluster of 3 double crochets (= a granny stitch), followed by 2 stitches between each cluster. This applies to the first round of granny stitches; from then on, granny stitches are worked in the spaces between the granny stitches of the previous round.

It is now time to work sc around the handle, all the way around. Before you begin, make sure the loop is on the inside and that the strand of yarn you are picking up stitches from is on the outside.
Then insert your hook into the next st, pick up the yarn, pull it through, yarn over, and pull through. Continue all the way around the opening.
Distribute your sts as evenly as possible so that the sc are balanced evenly all the way around.

Finish by cutting the yarn and weaving in all loose ends with a tapestry needle. Done!
LARGE CLUTCH BAG
This bag is crocheted with a round base and works with all rounded clutch handles. The base should be the same size as an opened clutch handle.
Take your main color, Rusty Yellow, and a 3.5 mm crochet hook. We will now crochet in a spiral to create a round bag base. Use a stitch marker to keep track of where each new round begins and ends.
R0: 6 sc in MR. (6)
R1: inc in each sc. (12)
R2: *inc, sc* x6. (18)
R3: *sc, inc, sc* x6. (24)
R4: *inc, 3 sc* x6. (30)
R5: *2 sc, inc, 2 sc* x6. (36)
R6: *inc, 5 sc* x6. (42)
R7: *3 sc, inc, 3 sc* x6. (48)
R8: *inc, 7 sc* x6. (54)
R9: *4 sc, inc, 4 sc* x6. (60)
R10: *inc, 9 sc* x6. (66)
R11: *5 sc, inc, 5 sc* x6. (72)
R12: *inc, 11 sc* x6. (78)
R13: *6 sc, inc, 6 sc* x6. (84)
R14: *inc, 13 sc* x6. (90)
R15: *7 sc, inc, 7 sc* x6. (96)
R16: *inc, 15 sc* x6. (102)
R17: *8 sc, inc, 8 sc* x6. (108)
R18: *'inc, 17 sc* x6. (114)
R19: *9 sc, inc, 9 sc* x6. (120)
R20: *inc, 19 sc* x6. (126)
R21: *10 sc, inc, 10 sc* x6. (132)
R22: *inc, 21 sc* x6. (138)

R54–R55: 138 sc, finish with 1 sl st. (138)
