Crochet acorn basket “Manne”

Crochet a beautiful acorn basket.

Crochet a basket with a lid that looks like an acorn—much more fun than a regular basket with a lid, right? This basket is easy to crochet as the pattern uses only a few techniques. The pattern uses EKO Braided Rope 3 mm along with a 8 mm crochet hook. The colors are Cacao and Beige.

Yarn Consumption: Approximately 170 g of Beige and 120 g of Cacao. Yarn consumption depends on how tightly you crochet.

Please note that in this tutorial, we use videos from our technique library. If you are looking for a full-length video for a crocheted basket, we recommend the basket "Olivia".

This is what you need:

Here's how to do it

You start by crocheting the basket itself and then crochet the top of the acorn. The trickiest part is getting the top to fit nicely on the basket. Often, different techniques are crocheted with different tension, but I explain in the pattern how to approach this. /Lizette

Steg 1

Basket 14 cm high & 12 cm in diameter

The Basket

Round 1: Start by crocheting 8 single crochets into a magic ring. If you’re unsure how to crochet a magic ring with single crochets, watch the video below (Magic ring Single Crochet).

Round 2: Crochet two single crochets in each stitch. You will have 16 stitches in total.

Round 3: Crochet two single crochets in every other stitch, between these, crochet one single crochet. You will have 24 stitches in total.

Round 4: Crochet a border round. This means crocheting into the back loop and the third loop (the one behind the back loop). Crochet two single crochets in every fourth stitch, and between these, crochet one single crochet. If you’re unsure how to crochet a basket bottom, watch the video below (Crochet the edge of a basket) (30).

Rounds 5-15: Now we will begin crocheting the side of the basket. This is done by alternating between waistcoat stitches and single crochets. Start with a waistcoat stitch. Continue like this for 11 rounds. You will always have 30 stitches in each round. Remember that all waistcoat stitches are worked into the same stitch, and the same goes for the single crochet. Be careful not to miss the single crochet, as it can sometimes get hidden behind the waistcoat stitch. If you’re unsure how to crochet a waistcoat stitch, see the video below.

Finish with a slip stitch in the next stitch and then fasten off the yarn. If you’re unsure how to crochet a slip stitch or how to fasten off the yarn, see the video below.

Shape the basket so that it stands firmly and has a good shape.

Steg 2

Top

We will crochet the top of the basket.

Round 1: Crochet 6 single crochets into a magic ring.

From now on, everything will be crocheted in Camel Stitches (in the stitch loop behind the back loop). If you're unsure how to crochet Camel Stitches, see the video below.

Round 2: Crochet two single crochets in each stitch. You will have 12 stitches at the end of this round.

Round 3: Crochet 12 single crochets, one in each stitch. You will have 12 stitches at the end of this round.

Round 4: Crochet two single crochets in every other stitch. Between these, crochet one single crochet. You will have 18 stitches at the end of this round.

Round 5: Crochet two single crochets in every third stitch. Between these, crochet one single crochet. You will have 24 stitches at the end of this round.

Round 6: Crochet 24 single crochets, one in each stitch. You will have 24 stitches at the end of this round.

Round 7: Crochet two single crochets in every fourth stitch. Between these, crochet one single crochet. You will have 30 stitches at the end of this round.

Round 8: Crochet two single crochets, then two single crochets in the same stitch. Then crochet two single crochets in every fifth stitch. Between these, crochet one single crochet. Repeat this until you have two stitches remaining. In those two stitches, crochet one single crochet in each. You will have 36 stitches at the end of this round.

Check the fit to see if the top fits the basket. Sometimes it might feel too small, but after one more round, it should fit better. If it’s too small, crochet one more round with increases, Round 8 EXTRA. Mark the last stitch of Round 8 in case you need to frog it.

Round 8 EXTRA: Crochet 17 single crochets, and in the 18th stitch, crochet two single crochets in the same stitch. Repeat this once more. You will have 38 stitches at the end of this round. If you crochet very tightly, you may need to crochet two single crochets in every ninth stitch, with one single crochet in between. This will give you 40 stitches at the end of the round.

Rounds 9-12: Crochet 36/38/40 single crochets, one in each stitch. You will have 36/38/40 stitches. Repeat for 4 rounds.
Test the fit as you go. If you’ve made increases and it’s too large, frog it and remove the extra round with increases. If it’s still a little too large, you can slightly pinch the top together.

Finish with a slip stitch and secure the yarn.

Steg 3

Flap

Row 1: Crochet a chain of 8 chain stitches. If you're unsure how to crochet a chain, check out the video below.

Row 2: Start in the second stitch (skip the first stitch closest to the hook). Crochet 7 single crochet stitches. Cut the yarn and leave a tail.

Attach the flap to the top between the magic ring and row 1. Use the yarn tail you saved from the flap to go up and down between the flap and the top to secure it properly. Fasten off both ends of the flap. Then, weave in all the loose ends.

Your basket is now complete! 🎉
