Crochet placemat “Jasmine”
Crochet a Beautiful Placemat
Create a placemat with this pattern! You can choose whether you want a larger (rectangular) or smaller (square) version. This pattern is suitable for those who have basic crochet skills. Regardless of which shape you choose, the placemat is worked flat in one single piece — perfect if you want to practice working with more than one color. You will need MYO Cotton Cloud yarn (we used Cacao and Beige), 4 mm crochet hook, A darning needle, 2 stitch markers. Finished size is about 34 cm wide and 50 cm long (rectangular) and about 34 cm on each side (square).
Yarn Consumption: Approximately 70 g of Cacao and under 100 g of Beige (for the rectangular size).
Note: In this pattern, we use videos from our technique school along with step-by-step photos.

This is what you need:

Here's how to do it
The challenges for this pattern: 1) Keeping track of two skeins of yarn. 2) Remember to carry the “non-active thread” with you. 3) Change the color thread before finishing your post. 4) Remembering how to make your row changes. /Michelle

This beautiful placemat is crocheted flat, in rows. If you’d like to see a chart, see step 9.

Row 0: Start by crocheting a chain of 67 chain stitches using the Cacao color (67). Add the Beige yarn, which we will now carry along with us.
If you’re unsure how to crochet a chain, see the video below.
Row 1: Crochet 66 single crochets using the Cacao color, working into the back loop of the chain stitches.
If you’re unsure how to crochet single crochets, see the video below.

It’s now time to prepare for a new row, and to get straight side edges, we will make a “stacked double crochet” (66).
Stacked double crochet:
Crochet two chain stitches (here, the first time using the Cacao color).

Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook.

Yarn over and pull through. Turn your crochet piece with these two loops on the hook.

Insert the hook directly into the first single crochet of the new row. Yarn over.

Pull through two loops.

Yarn over and pull through two loops. This becomes the first double crochet of the new row (it looks like two double crochets, hence the name “Stacked Double Crochet”).There is a video for this in the pattern “Rory Scarf” (How to finish and start a new row), see below.
Remember that a color change is made before pulling through the last two loops of a double crochet.
Keep in mind that you are crocheting flat. Since you turn your work when making a “stacked double crochet,” the pattern does not explicitly state that you should turn after each row.
Row 2: *Crochet: 6 double crochets in Cacao (the first one of the row is a stacked double crochet you just made). Continue crocheting: 2 double crochets in Beige, 4 double crochets in Cacao, 12 double crochets in Beige, 4 double crochets in Cacao, 2 double crochets in Beige*. Repeat from * to * one more time.

Then crochet 6 double crochets in Cacao. Prepare for the new row with a stacked double crochet, which will always be the first double crochet of the new row. Make sure you have switched to Beige, as the new row starts with that color. Total: 66 stitches in the row, which is the number of stitches you will have in every row from now on.)

Row 3: *Crochet: 2 double crochets in Beige, 2 double crochets in Cacao, 4 double crochets in Beige, 2 double crochets in Cacao, 16 double crochets in Beige, 2 double crochets in Cacao, 2 double crochets in Beige*. Repeat from * to * one more time.

Then crochet 2 double crochets in Beige, 2 double crochets in Cacao, 2 double crochets in Beige. Prepare for the new row with a stacked double crochet. Make sure to keep the Beige color, as the next row starts with this color.
(Total: 66 stitches)
Finishing the row to keep straight side edges:
So far, we have started each row with a stacked double crochet, but now we will also finish our rows as follows:
Instead of making the last double crochet as usual through the last stitch, insert your hook into the stitch loop closest to you along with the yarn running along the side edge. See the video below if you need help. Then complete the last double crochet as you normally would.

Row 4: Crochet: *6 double crochets in Beige, 4 double crochets in Cacao, 16 double crochets in Beige, 4 double crochets in Cacao*. Repeat from * to * one more time.

Then crochet 6 double crochets in Beige. Now finish the row as in Row 3, and prepare as usual for the new row with a stacked double crochet, starting with the Cacao color.

*Crochet: 2 double crochets in Cacao, 2 double crochets in Beige, 4 double crochets in Cacao, 8 double crochets in Beige, 4 double crochets in Cacao, 8 double crochets in Beige, 2 double crochets in Cacao*. Repeat from * to * one more time.
Then crochet 2 double crochets in Cacao, 2 double crochets in Beige, 2 double crochets in Cacao.

Square shape: From here, repeat the pattern from Row 2 to Row 16 a total of 2 times if you want a more square shape (≈ 34×34 cm).
Rectangular shape: Repeat Row 2 to Row 16 a total of 3 times if you want a rectangular placemat (≈ 34×50 cm).

If you want it longer, you can make additional repeats to eventually create a table runner, but you may need extra skeins depending on how long you want to crochet, especially of the Beige/background color.
When you are finished, end the last row with 1 ch, turn your work, and crochet a final row of 66 sc in Cacao.
Then weave in all ends. Done!
