Crochet terry mat “Mandy”
Crochet a beautiful terry rug with a pattern
Using a large crochet hook and thick yarn, you can quickly create this beautiful rug for your home! All you need to know are chain stitches, single crochets, and half double crochets. Since the rug is worked flat with simple row turns, it is perfect for beginners who want to try working with more than one color. The pattern and color changes also make this a fun project for more experienced crocheters. You will need two colors of terry yarn (we used “Nature White” and “Almond”), scissors, a yarn needle, and a 10 mm crochet hook.
Yarn Consumption: approx. 870 g of Nature White and approx. 535 g of Almond for a rug measuring about 84–85 cm wide and about 58 cm long.
Please note that this pattern includes videos from our technique library along with images.

Here's how to do it
The rug is worked flat with standard row turns. When working with two colors, one strand is carried inside the stitches while the other is used. The carried strand is also referred to as the “non-active yarn” in the pattern description. After 2–3 half double crochets, it is important to gently pull the non-active yarn so that everything lies neatly and the pattern shows clearly—otherwise, there is a risk that the non-active yarn will be more visible between the stitches than desired./Michelle

INFO
Want to adjust the size? The pattern motif is repeated 5 times per row. You can choose to repeat it more or fewer times depending on how wide you want your rug to be.
This means you increase the number of chain stitches by 10, 20, 30, etc. if you want a wider rug (or decrease accordingly if you want a smaller rug).
The motif in height begins at Row 2 and ends at Row 11. Here as well, you can repeat Rows 2–11 as many times as you like if you want a longer rug. You can stop wherever you like, so you don’t need to complete a full sequence.
Use a 10 mm crochet hook and start with the color Almond.
Row 1: Chain 52. Total: 52 stitches.
If you are unsure how to crochet a chain, see the video below.
Add the white yarn.

It’s time to carry the non-active yarn throughout the entire project. Remember to gently pull the non-active yarn (the strand you are carrying) after 2–3 half double crochets—when using thicker yarn, it can become bulky if you wait too long before tightening it.
Note: When changing color, pull the new color through all three loops before completing the last half double crochet. See the video below if you are unsure.

Row 2: Begin in the 3rd chain from the hook. *4 almond half double crochets, 6 white half double crochets* – repeat between *...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 white chain stitches. Turn. You have a total of 50 stitches.
If you are unsure how to crochet a half double crochet, see the video below.

You should always have 50 stitches in each row until the rug is finished. The two chain stitches at the end of each row are skipped when starting the next row—you do not work into them; they only serve as turning chains.
Row 3: *4 white half double crochets, 4 almond half double crochets, 2 white half double crochets* – repeat between *...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 white chain stitches. Turn.

Row 4: *4 white half double crochets, 4 almond half double crochets, 2 white half double crochets* – repeat between *...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 almond chain stitches. Turn.

Row 5: *4 almond half double crochets, 6 white half double crochets* – repeat between *'...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 almond chain stitches. Turn.

Row 6: *2 almond half double crochets, 6 white half double crochets, 2 almond half double crochets* – repeat between *...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 white chain stitches. Turn.

Row 7: *6 white half double crochets, 4 almond half double crochets* – repeat between *...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 white chain stitches. Turn.

Row 8: *2 white half double crochets, 4 almond half double crochets, 4 white half double crochets* – repeat between *...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 white chain stitches. Turn.

Row 9: *2 white half double crochets, 4 almond half double crochets, 4 white half double crochets* – repeat between *...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 white chain stitches. Turn.

Row 10: *6 white half double crochets, 4 almond half double crochets* – repeat between *...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 almond chain stitches. Turn.

Row 11: *2 almond half double crochets, 6 white half double crochets, 2 almond half double crochets* – repeat between *...* a total of 5 times. Finish with 2 almond chain stitches. Turn.

Repeat Rows 2–11 one more time. After that, we chose to repeat Row 2 and Row 3 a third time before finishing the motif section. You can repeat as many times as you like.
Cut the white yarn (leave approx. 10 cm to weave in) and make 1 almond chain stitch.
Finish with 1 row of 52 almond single crochets. When you reach the end of the row, make 1 chain stitch and cut the yarn, making sure to leave enough length to weave in and secure.
Done!
