Checkered carpet “Tea”

Crochet a wonderful and fun carpet with a checkered pattern. The rug is a bit more advanced than our other current designs and you have an advantage if you crocheted some of our other designs before. There are some color changes to keep an eye on, but the result will be incredibly beautiful! In the video, we go through all the steps on the carpet so in case you get stuck somewhere in the text, watch the video. This carpet has been crocheted in EKO Medium yarn ("Nature White" and "Mint Green") together with 8 mm crochet hook, but you can of course also use our other EKO yarns. EKO Froté is great if you want a softer carpet for example for the bathroom.

The carpet in the video measures about 64 x 52 cm but it all depends on how hard you crochet, but of course you make your rug as big as you want. You can also use this checkered technique for other things - for example, crocheted pillow cases!

Yarn consumption: From a 1000g roll EKO Medium you get an carpet of about 40 x 70 cm, use this as a counting example when calculating how many rolls you need for the desired size.

Here's how to do it

The carpet is crocheted in squares that are made of 9 stitches. Of course, you can crochet smaller squares (fewer than 9 stitches) or larger (more than 9 stitches). After one square is crocheted, we change color. The square will be about 12 x 12 cm in size.

Steg 1

Start by choosing a border color that we will use on the edge. In the video, each square is 9 stitches long and the border color is white.

Row 1 - the chain

Start by crocheting a chain. Start by making a loop around the crochet hook. One way you can do this is to wrap the yarn around your index and middle finger and then pull the yarn up so that the loop locks when you tighten. Crochet loops by picking up yarn and pull through. The number of loops depends on how big you want your carpet. If you crochet a square 9 stitches long, you crochet a number of loops that is divisible by 9. For reference, 45 stitches are crocheted in the video.

When you crochet the number of stitches you want, you crochet one more loop.

Steg 2

Row 2

Row two is crocheted in the border color as well. Start at the second stitch, thus skipping the first loop on the chain. Now crochet single crochets until the end of the chain. Go down into a stitch, pick up yarn and pull through. You have two stitches on your crochet hook. Pick up the yarn again and pull through. Continue like this until you're at the end.

If you had 45 stitches on your chain before you made the last loop, you should crochet 45 single crochets in row 2 as well.

When you're at the end, crochet a loop and turn your work around.

Steg 3

Row 3

Now let's start crocheting with two colors. Start with the first color (border color), skip the first stitch and go down to the second stitch and crochet 9 white single crochet stitches. After you have crocheted 8 single crochets, we will prepare for crocheting the 9th stitch. The 9th stitch is always the stitch where we change color in. So start by going down in the 9th stitch, pick up yarn so you have two stitches on the crochet hook. Instead of picking up the white yarn again and pulling through, take color 2 and pull through with the new color.

Now we have changed color, do not cut off color 1. Crochet 9 stitches with color 2 but remember that in the 9th stitch we do the color change in the same way as we just did. In this next color change, we will catch the white yarn (color 1) again. Let the yarn go on the back of the carpet. Make sure it lie like a stripe on the back. Also, make sure it's not too tight so the carpet can't lie flat (check the video if you are unsure). Crochet 9 stitches of color 1 again and change the color in the 9e stitch to color 2.

Remember! Always keep the line on the back of the carpet enough stretched, the carpet should lie flat on the floor and if the line is too tight, it will not lay flat.

Crochet a loop and turn your work around.

Row 4

We will crochet row 4 and the technique is exactly the same but the yarn change will now take place on the side of the carpet that is facing up, towards you (because the back of the rug is now facing up). So when you are going to change color in the 9th stitch, you let the yarn of color 1 go on the front instead of the back, and capture color 2 from the front instead of the back. When changing color, all stripes take place on the same side. It can be a bit difficult to get all the yarn on the correct side but it is important that the front side is clean. This is the difference from row 3.

Now alternate row 3 and 4 throughout the carpet! First, crochet a total of 9 rows on this checker pattern so the boxes becomes square. Then we will switch color order. On the next step, I explain how to do. But you still keep alternating rows 3 and 4 throughout the carpet.

Steg 4

Switch color

The square should become square (same hight and length) and after that we will switch color order. On the 9th row, you do not finish with a loop in color 1, but when you crochet your 9th stitch on the 9th row, you make a loop in color 2. Then you turn your work over and continue to crochet 9 rows with this color order. You start to crochet 9 stitches in color 2.

You continue with the same technique that we have done before and the only difference, and that you need to keep in mind when we switch the color of the squares, is to make the loop before turning in the new second color.

Crochet in this way until you are satisfied with the size of your carpet. When you are satisfied, we will crochet a finishing row.

Steg 5

The finishing row

When you crochet the last row so that the last row of boxes is square, then change the color to your border color. Thus, you make the loop at the end in the border color. The last row is crocheted in single crochet and you crochet the row in the border color.

Cut the yarn. Now attach all the yarn ends to the back of the carpet. Go under a loop on the back of the carpet and tie a knot, hiding the remaining yarn end under a few stitches.

Now your carpet is ready, GOOD JOB!
