Crochet mittens “Bella”
Crochet these cozy mittens “Bella” in our wool yarn MYO Basic Wool
This instruction is suitable for everyone even beginners as all the steps are shown in the video. The mittens will be cozy and will suit both men and women. You will need MYO Basic Wool, a 6 mm crochet needle and a blunt sewing needle. Then you just have to get going.
Yarn consumption: about 100g -150g depending on the size of the mittens you crochet (equivalent to 1-2 rolls of yarn).
This is what you need:
Here's how to do it
Start by measuring from the top of the thumb down to the wrist, remember to include the elastic around the wrist which should be about 5cm high.
We start by making a slipknot/loop through which we then thread the crochet hook. To create a slipknot/loop: Take the end of the yarn and twist 2 turns around your fingers. Use the crochet hook to pull the inner yarn under the outer yarn to create a loop. Thread the crochet hook into the loop.
Row 1: Now we will crochet a chain consisting of approx. 25 loops. The number of loops depends on how far the measurement from the top of the thumb down to the wrist is. The chain should be the same length as the measurement from the top of the thumb down to the wrist so you may need to add or remove loops.
Row 2: When you have crocheted a chain that is the same length as the measurement from the top of your thumb down to your wrist, crochet an extra loop and turn. Now we're going to crochet single stitches all the way to the other side. One single crochet in each loop. You crochet a single crochet by going down into the second loop, picking up yarn, and pulling through (you have two loops on the hook). Then you pick up the yarn again and pull through both loops. Continue until you reach the end. If you made 26 loops, you will crochet 25 single crochets because you skipped one. When you have crocheted single crochets all the way to the other side, make a chain stitch and turn the project.
Row 3: Now we will start the elastic at the bottom of the mitten by crocheting only in the back loop of stitches. If you look at your work, you will see two lines on each stitch. The line closest to you is the front loop and the one furthest back is the back loop.
The elastic should be approx. 5 cm high, which corresponded to 8 stitches in the example. So start by crocheting these eight stitches in the back loop. Once you have crocheted these single crochets in only the back loop and are happy with the height of the elastic around the wrist, go back to working regular single crochets in the entire stitch all the way to the top.
When you have worked all the way through, make an extra single crochet in the last stitch to make an increase (an increase is two stitches in each stitch). Make a chain stitch and turn the project.
Row 4: Make two single crochets in the first stitch (increase) and then crochet a single crochet in each but remember to only crochet in the back loop of stitches at the bottom where you crochet the elastic. Crochet a chain stitch and turn the project.
Row 5: Crochet in the back loop to create the elastic. Work the same number of stitches as before. Then crochet single crochets all the way to the penultimate loop. Now we will make a reduction. Thread the crochet hook through the penultimate loop, pull up a loop on the hook so that you have a total of two loops on the hook, dip into the last loop and pull up a loop so that you have a total of three loops on the hook. Catch the yarn and pull through all three loops. Crochet a chain stitch and turn the project.
Row 6: Make a decrease in the first two loops again by first dipping into the first loop, pull up a loop so that you have two loops on the hook. Then dive into the next loop, pull up another loop on the hook so that you have a total of three loops on the hook. Pick up the yarn again and pull through all three loops. Then crochet single crochets all the way down, remembering to crochet only in the back loop of stitches at the bottom where the elastic is created. Make a chain stitch and turn the project.
Now we are done with the thumb and move on to crocheting the next part of the mitten.
Row 7: Crochet the elastic. Measure from the bottom edge of the mitten up to the opening on the hand between thumb and palm and crochet single stitches to that point on the hand.
Then you drop into the same stitch you just made a double crochet in, pull up a loop so you have two loops on the hook, catch the yarn and pull through both loops. After that, dip into the stitch you just made, pull up a loop so you have two loops on the hook. Catch the yarn again and pull through. Repeat until you have crocheted a chain that reaches the top of your index finger. Crochet a chain stitch, turn the project.
Row 8: Crochet single stitches all the way down. Remember to crochet only in the back loop at the bottom of the mitten to create the elastic around the wrist. Crochet a chain stitch, turn.
Row 9: Crochet double crochets in the back loop and then regular single crochets to the top. In the last stitch, at the top, we will make an increase. Crochet two double crochets in the last stitch, make a chain stitch and turn the project.
Row 10: Make an increase (two single crochets) in the first stitch, then crochet single crochets all the way down. Remember to crochet only in the back loop at the bottom. Crochet a chain stitch, turn the project.
Row 11-15: Crochet in the back stitch loop to create the elastic. Then continue working regular single crochets all the way up. Repeat this round 4 more times (alternatively 7 or 9 rounds depending on how wide your hand is. You should crochet forward until you reach the beginning of the little finger. See picture 3. Always finish the rows with a loop (chain stitch) before turning.
Row 16: Now we will crochet two rows where we decrease at the top of the mitten to create a rounded edge. Decrease by pulling up a loop so that you have two loops on the needle. then dip into the next loop, pull up another loop on the hook so that you have a total of three loops on the hook. Catch the yarn and pull through all three loops. Finish the rows with a chain stitch and then turn.
Row 17-18: When you have decreased at the top in two rows, we will crochet two rows where we increase at the top. The increase is made by crocheting an extra single crochet in the same stitch, a total of two single crochets in the last stitch. Always finish the row with a chain stitch.
Row 19-23: Then crochet 5 (alternatively 7 or 9 - the same number of rows as the last) rows with single stitches without increasing or decreasing. Always finish with a chain stitch.
Now we will crochet the other part of the thumb.
The second part we crochet in the opposite direction compared to the first part of the thumb.
Row 24: Dive into the stitch you just made a single crochet in, pull up a loop so you have two loops on the hook, catch the yarn, and pull through both loops. After that, dip into the stitch you just made and pull up a loop so you have two loops on the hook. Catch the yarn again and pull through. Repeat until you have the same number of stitches as the other part for the thumb. I crocheted 7 stitches + a loop to be able to turn the project. After you have crocheted the chain for the thumb + a loop, turn the project over.
Row 25: Crochet back to the top of the mitten. When you get to the other side, make a decrease by pulling up a loop so that you have two loops on the needle. Then dive into the next loop, pull up another loop on the hook so that you have a total of three loops on the hook. Catch the yarn and pull through all three loops. Make an extra stitch, turn the project.
Row 26: Decrease in the first two stitches again. Crochet single crochets all the way back to the top of the thumb. Here we will make an increase, crochet an extra single stitch in the last loop. Make an extra stitch, turn project.
Row 27: Crochet an increase in the first stitch and then crochet single stitches back to the top of the mitten again. Now we will make one last decrease before we can cut the yarn and attach the "tail". Make the decrease in the same way as before, by pulling up a loop so that you have two loops on the needle. Then dive into the next loop and pull up another loop on the hook so that you have a total of three loops on the hook. Catch the yarn and pull through all three loops. Finish with a chain stitch.
Once you´ve cut the yarn, tied a knot, and secured the yarn by weaving it into a few stitches, we will sew the mittens together.
This step is the only thing that separates the right and left mittens. So you crochet two identical mittens and then you will sew them together in different ways so that they fit the right and left hand respectively.
We start with the left. Lay the project flat with the elastic closest to you and the rounded top of the mitten furthest away. The thumb pointing down should be on the right side and the thumb pointing up should be on the left. Then you fold the right part of the mitt so that it lies, edge to edge, on top of the left part. Fold the thumb that is pointing down, the one on the right side, so that it is on top of the mitt and points up. Then fold over the left thumb so that it is matching with the other. Sew the project together from the bottom edge at the elastic up to the top. You can either make chain stitches along the edge to "sew together" or use a large blunt sewing needle and sew the mittens together with a garter stitch.
To sew the right mitten together, turn the mitten so that the thumb pointing down is on the left side and the thumb pointing up is on the right side. Simply explained, you turn the entire crochet like a page in a book. Now fold the left side of the mitt so that it lies on top of the right side, edge to edge. Fold the thumb pointing down (left side) so it points up. Fold over the other part for the thumb so that it is on top. Sew together from edge to edge as before.
Attach all yarn ends and your mittens are ready!
Start by measuring from the top of the thumb down to the wrist, remember to include the elastic around the wrist which should be about 5cm high.
