Here's how to do it
This is a quick-to-crochet pattern for a book cover featuring a lovely texture created using the Spiked Sedge Stitch technique. If you can make a single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet, you’ll be able to master this technique with ease. The cover can be easily adjusted in size to fit your favorite book! You crochet a front and back piece of the same size, then join them together along three sides. Add four tie strings, and it’s done! Hope you’ll give it a try and make your own book cover! Good luck!/ Johanna

The pattern consists of repeats of a specific technique — the Spiked Sedge Stitch — where each stitch requires 3 chain stitches.
If you want to make the cover wider than shown in the picture, you always need to increase the chain in multiples of 3 chains — that is, 3, 6, 9, 12, etc.
In this pattern, 10 repeats of the stitch are made (which results in 10 stripes along the length), which means you’ll need 30 chain stitches. Then you add one extra chain at the end (30 + 1).
In the same way, you can subtract 3 chains (as many times as you'd like) to make the cover smaller.
Foundation chain: Make a chain of 31 stitches. Turn.
If you're unsure how to make a chain, see the video below.
Row 1: Skip the first chain from your hook and start in the second chain. Crochet 30 single crochets (sc). Chain 1 and turn.If you're unsure how to crochet a single crochet (sc), see the video below.
Row 2: Start in the second stitch from your hook. In the same stitch, crochet one single crochet, one half double crochet, and one double crochet. Skip the next two stitches. If you're unsure how to crochet a half double crochet or a double crochet, see the videos below.

Repeat this (a total of 10 times) or until there are 3 stitches remaining.

Skip 2 stitches and make a single crochet in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 3: The first stitch/repeat in the row is slightly different from the others.
In the first stitch (see image below with the yellow and green hook), make one single crochet and one half double crochet in the first stitch (where the green hook is).

Make one double crochet into the space directly beneath the first single crochet/stitch repeat on the row below (as shown by the yellow hook in the image above). You’ve now completed the first spiked sedge stitch, i.e., one full pattern repeat.

For the rest of the repeats in the row: See the image with the red and blue hooks. Make a single crochet and a half double crochet in the single crochet (where the red hook is placed).

Make a double crochet in the stitch where the blue hook is pointing (in the image above).

Make sure to pull up the yarn you catch to the same height as the other two loops on the crochet hook before pulling the yarn through to complete the double crochet, as shown in the picture.

Repeat this a total of 10 times (including the first stitch). Make a single crochet in the last stitch of the row.

Make one chain stitch and turn. Repeat row 3 for as long as you want your cover to be. The pieces in the picture are about 35 rows long. Do not cut the yarn.
When you are happy with the length of the piece, crochet single crochets along one of the long sides to create an edge that will frame the opening. Make an extra single crochet in the corners, see the picture. Space out the stitches evenly so that the edge is straight. Do this only on one of the long sides of the piece. Cut the yarn and fasten the end. If you are unsure how to fasten off, se below video.

Repeat steps 1-3 to make another piece. They form the front and back of the book case.
Fold the pieces together along the long sides using single crochet stitches, all facing the same direction. This will create the opening of the cover. Place them so that the wrong sides of the single crochets face inward and the right sides face outward. See the picture below step 3. The right side is the piece lying in front in the picture, and the wrong side is in the background.
Make a slip knot and pick up yarn in the upper right corner (the crocheted long side on the right). If you’re unsure how to make a slip knot, see the video below.
Crochet single crochets through both layers along the three sides that do not have a crocheted edge of single crochets. In the corners, make 3 single crochets in the same stitch.

Cut the yarn and fasten off.
Now you will crochet 4 straps to tie the cover together. Make a slip knot and pull up yarn where you want the strap to be. Chain 45 stitches (if you want a shorter/longer strap, you can adjust the number of chains).

Skip the first stitch and work slip stitches back (44 stitches). Finish with a slip stitch into the first stitch on the edge. If you’re unsure how to crochet slip stitches, see the video below.

Cut the yarn and fasten the end on the inside of the cover.

Crochet 3 more ties the same way. Now you’re done! Great job ☺

This pattern consists of repeats of a technique called spiked sedge stitch, where each part of the stitch requires 3 chains.
If you want to make the case wider than in the picture, you always need to increase the foundation chain by multiples of 3 (3, 6, 9, 12, etc.).
In this pattern, 10 repeats of the stitch are worked (which equals 10 stripes along the length), so you need 30 chains, plus one extra chain at the end (30 + 1).
Similarly, you can decrease by multiples of 3 chains if you want the case smaller.
Step 1
Ch 31, turn.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc 30 (30 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 2: [sc, hdc, dc], sk 2* — repeat 10 times, sc 1, ch 1, turn.
Let me know if you want me to translate more steps!

Row 3: [sc, hdc], 1 l-dc worked above the first sc two rows below (see yellow hook in the picture), *sk 2 sts, [sc, hdc], 1 l-dc worked above the sc two rows below (see blue hook)* — repeat 9 times, sk 2 sts, sc 1. Total 10 stitch repeats. Ch 1, turn.

Make sure to pull up the yarn you grab to the same height as the other two loops on your hook before completing the yarn over on the l-dc. See the picture.

Row 4 to about row 35: Repeat row 3 until your book cover reaches the desired length. The pieces in the picture are about 35 rows long. Do not cut the yarn.
Step 3:
When you’re happy with the length of the piece, crochet sc along one of the long edges to create a border that will frame the opening. Make an extra sc in each corner, see the picture. Space out the sts evenly so the border lies flat and straight. Do this only on one of the long edges of the piece. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Step 4:
Repeat steps 1–3 to make another piece. These will form the front and back of the book cover.
Step 5:
Place the pieces together with the long sides that have single crochets facing the same way. This will form the opening of the cover. Arrange them so the wrong sides of the single crochet edges face inward, and the right sides face outward. See the picture in Step 3.
The right side is the piece at the front of the picture, and the wrong side is in the background.
Make a slip knot and join yarn in the upper right corner (the crocheted long edge on the right).
Crochet sc through both layers along the three sides that do not have a crocheted sc border. In the corners, make 3 sc in the same st.

Cut the yarn and fasten off.
Step 6:
Now you will crochet 4 ties to close the cover. Make a slip knot and join yarn where you want the tie to be. Ch 45, turn. Skip 1 ch, then sl st 44 back along the chain. Attach the tie by sl st it to the edge of the book cover. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends on the inside of the cover.
