Crochet monkey “Olof”
Crochet a cute little decorative monkey!
This little monkey is perfect for a children's room. It looks extra cute alongside the bunny "Leia". It is crocheted in EKO Nano "Cacao" and "Light Peach" with a 6 mm crochet hook. This pattern has many different steps and might be challenging for complete beginners. A tip is to crochet the bunny "Leia" first, which has a full-length video where you can see all the steps.
In addition to yarn and a crochet hook, you will need something to stuff the monkey with – we use fiberfill stuffing. You will also need a stitch marker, a needle, and black, thin yarn to embroider the eyes. Keep in mind that the monkey Olof is meant for decoration. If you want to use it as a toy, you need to ensure it is safe enough for that purpose.
Yarn Consumption: approximately 110 g of "Cacao" and 40 g of "Light Peach". You will also need around 40 g of stuffing. Yarn consumption may vary depending on how tightly you crochet.
Please note that in this tutorial, we use videos from our technique library. If you are looking for a full-length video for a crocheted animal, we recommend the bunny "Leia".
This is what you need:
Stickmarkörer / Säkerhetsnålar
De här små markörerna i stål påminner om säkerhetsnålar – de är lätta att flytta och pålitliga när du placerat dem.
Köp produktHere's how to do it
The monkey is crocheted in different parts. We start with the legs and then crochet the arms. Once these are done, we begin the body. While working on the body, we crochet the legs and arms directly onto it (so they don’t need to be sewn on separately). Next, we crochet the head and all the parts for the head. These are then attached together, and at the end, the eyes are embroidered. In the end, you'll have a cute little monkey 🐒 /Lizette
STEP 1 – LEGS
We start by crocheting two legs, these are crocheted in the same way. Begin by crocheting with "Light Peach".
We start with the foot.
Crochet 4 chain stitches. If you're unsure how to make a slip knot and then crochet 4 chain stitches, please refer to the video below.
Round 1:
Now, start crocheting on the chain. Skip the first chain stitch and begin in the 2nd chain. This means you have three chain stitches to work into. In the first two, crochet one single crochet in each stitch, and in the last chain, crochet four single crochets into the same stitch. Then, turn the chain around and crochet back on the other side. You have two stitches to work into; crochet one single crochet in the first, and in the last stitch, crochet four single crochets. You should have a total of 11 stitches. Place a stitch marker in your last stitch.
If you’re unsure how to crochet single crochets, please see the video below. If you're not sure what we mean by crocheting around the chain, you can see an example of this in the video below.
Round 2:
Now, crochet one single crochet in the next two stitches. In the next three stitches, crochet two single crochets in each stitch. Then, crochet one single crochet in the next four stitches. In the last two stitches, crochet two single crochets in each stitch. You should have a total of 16 stitches in this round. Place your stitch marker back in the last stitch.
Round 3:
Crochet 16 single crochets in the back loop only. If you’re unsure how to crochet in the back loop only, please see the video below. Always move your stitch marker so that it sits in the last stitch of each round.
Round 5: Crochet five single crochets in the next five stitches. Then, crochet a decrease. Finally, crochet nine single crochets until you reach the starting point. Place your stitch marker in the last stitch.
If you're unsure how to crochet a decrease, please refer to the video below.
Round 6: Crochet 3 single crochets. Then, crochet two decreases. Finally, crochet 8 single crochets. You should have a total of 13 stitches in this round.
Round 7: Crochet 1 single crochet. Then, crochet three decreases. Finally, crochet 6 single crochets. You should have a total of 10 stitches in this round.
Now, you will change color to brown. To do this, in the last stitch you made, you will complete the final pull-through with the new color. Unravel the last stitch and do it again, but for the final pull-through, use the new color and pull through with it instead.
Rounds 8-17: Crochet one single crochet in each stitch (10 single crochets) for each round, for a total of 7 rounds.
Stuff the foot with stuffing and only a little stuffing in the leg. Too much stuffing won’t work well, as it will cause the legs to not sit nicely.
Crochet four single crochets to reach the front of the leg.
Flatten the leg and crochet it together through both layers with four single crochets. It’s important that you crochet the leg together with four stitches.
Cut the yarn and secure it. If you’re unsure how to fasten off the yarn, please refer to the video below.
STEP 2 – ARMS
We continue by crocheting two arms, both of which are crocheted in the same way. Start by crocheting with "Light Peach".
Round 1: Crochet six single crochets into a magic ring. If you’re unsure how to crochet a magic ring, please refer to the video below (Magic Ring with Single Crochet).
Round 2: Crochet two single crochets in each stitch. You should have a total of 12 stitches in this round.
Round 3: Crochet one single crochet in each stitch. You should have a total of 12 stitches in this round.
Round 4: Crochet one single crochet, then make a decrease. Repeat this a total of four times. You should have 8 stitches in this round. Change color to brown.
Rounds 5-11: Crochet one single crochet in each stitch for a total of 7 rounds. End with a chain stitch. You should have 8 stitches in this round.
Stuff the hand lightly with stuffing, but leave the arm unstuffed.
Flatten the arm and crochet through both layers with three single crochets to close the arm. Then, fasten off the yarn.
STEP 3 – BODY (brown)
Now we will crochet the body, and as we crochet, we will attach the legs and arms so that they are fixed to the body immediately, and you won’t have to sew them on later.
Round 1: Crochet 6 single crochets into a magic ring.
Round 2: Crochet two single crochets in each stitch. You should have 12 stitches in this round.
Round 3: Crochet one single crochet in the first stitch, then crochet two single crochets in the same stitch in the second stitch. Repeat this (increase every other stitch) around the round. You should have 18 stitches in this round.
Round 4: Crochet two single crochets in the first two stitches, then crochet two single crochets in the same stitch in the second stitch. Repeat this (increase every third stitch) around the round. You should have 24 stitches in this round.
Rounds 5-6: Crochet one single crochet in each stitch for two rounds. You should have 24 stitches in each round.
Round 7: Now we will attach the legs to the body. Crochet 8 single crochets first. Then, take the first leg and place it parallel to the body, so that the foot is pointing towards you. We will now crochet in the next 4 stitches, but crochet through both the leg and the body. The first leg is now attached to the body. Crochet 8 single crochets. Then, do the same with the second leg. For the last 4 stitches, crochet through both the leg and the body. Make sure the foot is pointing in the same direction as the first one.
Round 8: Crochet one single crochet in each stitch. You should have 24 stitches in this round.
Round 9: Crochet 4 single crochets first. Then, crochet a decrease. Repeat: 4 single crochets, then a decrease a total of 4 times. You should have 20 stitches in this round.
Round 10: Crochet 20 single crochets, one in each stitch. You should have 20 stitches in this round.
Round 11: Crochet 2 single crochets first. Then, crochet a decrease. Repeat: 2 single crochets, then a decrease a total of 5 times. You should have 15 stitches in this round.
Round 12: Now we will attach the arms to the body in the same way we attached the legs. Crochet 5 single crochets first. Then, take the first arm and place it parallel to the body. We will now crochet in the next 3 stitches, but crochet through both the arm and the body. The first arm is now attached to the body. Crochet 5 single crochets. Now, there are only 2 stitches left in the round, but we will crochet in the next 3 stitches (so one extra stitch). Attach the second arm in the same way. Crochet through both the arm and the body for the next 3 stitches. We will now start Round 13 here instead.
Round 13: Crochet 1 single crochet first. Then, crochet a decrease. Repeat: 1 single crochet, then a decrease a total of 5 times. You should have 10 stitches in this round.
Stuff the body. Cut the yarn, but leave a yarn end to use for the assembly later.
STEP 4 – HEAD (brown)
Rounds 5-8: Crochet one single crochet in each stitch for four rounds. You should have 24 stitches in each round.
Round 9: Crochet three single crochets in the first three stitches, then crochet two single crochets in the same stitch in the second stitch. Repeat this (increase every fourth stitch) around the round. You should have 30 stitches in this round.
Round 10: Crochet one single crochet in each stitch. You should have 30 stitches in this round.
Round 11: Crochet one single crochet, then crochet a decrease. Repeat: 1 single crochet, then a decrease a total of 10 times. You should have 20 stitches in this round.
Round 12: Crochet 10 decreases. You should have 10 stitches remaining in this round.
Stuff the head. Cut the yarn and fasten it off.
STEP 5 – EARS (beige and brown)
The ears are crocheted in two parts, which are then crocheted together.
Part 1 – Beige:
Round 1: Crochet 5 single crochets into a magic ring.
Round 2: Crochet two single crochets in each stitch. You should have 10 stitches in this round. Finish with a slip stitch in the next stitch.
Cut the yarn and fasten it off. Crochet a total of two pieces.
Part 2 – Brown:
Round 1: Crochet 5 single crochets into a magic ring.
Round 2: Crochet two single crochets in each stitch. You should have 10 stitches in this round. Finish with a slip stitch in the next stitch.
Do not cut the yarn.
Now we will crochet the parts together. Take one of the beige pieces with the right side facing you. Place the brown piece with the right side facing outward at the back. We will crochet around the parts and join them together. This means you will crochet in the opposite direction on the beige piece.
Crochet 1 single crochet in the first stitch (through both parts), making sure to start in the first stitch of the brown piece, do not skip any stitches. In the second stitch, crochet two single crochets in the same stitch. Continue in this pattern, increasing every other stitch, around the round. Finish with a slip stitch. Save a yarn end for assembly.
Crochet the next part 2 in the same way until you have two ears.
STEP 6 – EYE PART (beige)
Round 1: Crochet 5 single crochets into a magic ring.
Round 2: Crochet two single crochets in each stitch. You should have 10 stitches in this round. Finish with a slip stitch in the next stitch.
Cut the yarn and save a longer yarn end for assembly. Secure the small yarn end.
Crochet a total of two pieces.
STEP 7 – MUZZLE (beige)
Row 1: Crochet 4 chain stitches. Turn.
Now you will start crocheting in rounds, just like you did on the foot, around the row.
Round 1: Crochet 2 single crochets, then crochet 4 single crochets into the same stitch in the last "top" stitch. Then, crochet on the other side. Crochet 1 single crochet, and then 4 single crochets into the last stitch. You should have a total of 11 stitches.
Round 2: Crochet 2 single crochets. In the next three stitches, crochet two single crochets in each. Then crochet 4 single crochets. In the last two stitches, crochet two single crochets in each stitch. You should have 16 stitches in total.
Round 3: Crochet 16 single crochets and finish with a slip stitch.
Cut the yarn and save a yarn end for assembly.
ASSEMBLY
A good tip for assembly is to first place the parts that need to be attached, for example using a needle. By placing them out first, before fastening, you can check that the placement is correct and also adjust if needed.
Attach the ears to the head. Attach the ears between rounds 6-8 (or where you think they look best). Secure them by sewing up and down with the needle between the ear and the head. Make sure the ear is firmly attached. Then attach the second ear and ensure that there are the same number of stitches between the ears on both the front and back sides so that they are centered. Once done, pull the yarn ends into the opening of the head. Tie a knot and hide the yarn ends inside the head.
I usually shape the ears a little by gently pushing in the beige part, so it curls slightly.
Attach the eye parts to the head.
Attach them between rounds 6-9 approximately, but place them on the head with pins before fastening. Both eye parts should be centered between the ears. The eye parts should not have any space between them. Pull the yarn end into the opening of the head.
Attach the snout to the head. Pin it in place. The increases you made on the snout should be aligned so that the snout is straight. The snout should be attached just above the eye parts. Be careful not to stretch or pull the snout while fastening it.
Once you’ve attached half of it, insert a bit of stuffing to fill it, then continue attaching.
Pull the yarn end to the opening of the head, tie it together with the other yarn end, and hide the ends inside.
Embroider the eyes onto the eye parts. You can embroider with black, thin yarn or thick thread. Sew up and down with the needle.
Pull the yarn end to the opening of the head, tie it together with the other yarn end, and hide the ends inside.
Embroider the nostrils. Embroider two diagonal nostrils on the snout, using black, thin yarn or thread. Embroider them on the second-to-last round of the snout.
Pull the yarn end to the opening of the head, tie it together with the other yarn end, and hide the ends inside.
Attach the body and head together. Sometimes you may need to add a little more stuffing while you are attaching the parts. The number of stitches on the last rounds of both the body and the head are the same, so sew up and down between the stitches and secure the parts firmly together.
Then, attach the final yarn end at the back of the body. I usually tie a knot around a stitch at the neck of the monkey and then pull the yarn end down inside the body to hide it there.
Cut off the yarn if you have a long yarn end remaining.
Your monkey is finished! :)
