Crocheted Dungarees "Olle"

Crochet warm dungarees for a baby!

These lovely pants are perfect for a baby, warm and comfortable. These dungarees are crocheted in MYO's wool yarn, Basic Wool, and the pattern is available in two sizes: 56/62 (approximately 1-4 months) and 68/74 (approximately 4-9 months). The entire pants, except for the ties, are crocheted in one piece, and the legs are crocheted together as you go. In addition to yarn and a crochet hook, it's helpful to have stitch markers for the project. You will also need 2 buttons; the ones used in this pattern are 20 mm in size.

Yarn Consumption: For size 56/62, about 140 g is needed, and for size 68/74, about 190 g is needed. Keep in mind that yarn consumption depends on how tightly you crochet, so you may need more than what's indicated here.

Please note that in this pattern, we use videos from our technique library along with explanatory pictures.

Here's how to do it

The dungarees are crocheted from back to front. First, the back piece is made, then the edge is rounded and you continue on the front piece. As you go, the inside of the legs is crocheted together, and the front and back pieces are joined at the sides as the last step. Finally, the suspenders and two buttons are added. Then it’s done! By crocheting in the back loops, the dungarees get a pleated and stretchy texture, providing a comfortable fit that the child can grow into. Good luck! /Johanna

Steg 1

The pattern is available in two sizes: 56/62 (approximately 1-4 months) and 68/74 (approximately 5-9 months). Steps 1+2 have different instructions depending on the size. From step 9 onwards, the instructions are the same for both sizes.

Steps 1-4 are for size 56/62. If you want to crochet size 68/74, start at step 5.

Size 56/62

Step 1: The Back Piece

The entire piece is crocheted in the back loop to create a 'ribbed' effect. At the ends, crochet ribbing with 15 single crochets at one end and 10 single crochets at the other end. The middle section is crocheted in half double crochets. The section with 10 single crochets forms the ankles, and the 15 single crochets form the back/waist.

Here you can see the pleated effect and the difference between single crochets and half double crochets.

If a longer ankle section is desired to allow for folding up/down a longer part, simply adjust the number of single crochets from 10 to the desired length. Note that the number of chain stitches at the beginning of both the left and right legs will also need to be adjusted.

Steg 2

Left Leg

Chain 55 chain stitches.

Row 1: Start in the second loop from the hook, crochet 10 single crochets. Then crochet 29 half double crochets, and finally, crochet 15 single crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn the piece. If you're unsure how to crochet a chain, single crochets, or half double crochets, see the videos below

From now on, you will always crochet in the back loop, which is the loop farthest from you. See the video below if you're unsure how to crochet in the back loop only.

You crochet in the back loop, the loop that is farthest from you.

Keep in mind to crochet everything in the back loop from now on (unless stated otherwise). We will not mention this throughout the pattern, but it applies until stated otherwise.

Row 2: Crochet 15 single crochets, then crochet 29 half double crochets, and finally crochet 10 single crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn the piece.

Row 3: Crochet 10 single crochets, then crochet 29 half double crochets. Lastly, crochet 15 single crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn the piece.

Rows 4-9: Continue alternating between row 2 and row 3 until you have a total of 9 rows. It is important that you finish with an odd-numbered row, meaning your last row ends with 15 single crochets in the back loop. A tip is to place markers in each row if you're unsure how to crochet the rows.

Steg 3

Crotch/Body Section

Row 10: Crochet 15 single crochets, then 10 half double crochets. Leave the remaining stitches unworked. Make 1 chain stitch and turn.

Row 11: Crochet 10 half double crochets, then 15 single crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn.

Row 12: Crochet 15 single crochets, then 10 half double crochets. Crochet 31 chain stitches. Turn.

Picture of the crotch and chain stitch chain.

Right Leg

Rows 13-21: Then repeat rows 1-9 (a total of 9 rows). On the first row (row 13), crochet in the back loop when you've completed all the stitches on the chain stitch. See the picture.

Place a marker in the last stitch you made on row 21. Do not cut the yarn. Now the back piece is complete and should look like this:

Steg 4

Step 2 - Front Piece

Right Leg

Continue crocheting where you left off on the back piece, thus starting the front of the pants.

Rows 22-26: Continue crocheting the right leg in the same way as the last rows of the back piece (alternate between row 2 and 3) for a total of 5 rows after the marker.

Row 27: Crochet 10 single crochets. Then crochet half double crochets in the remaining stitches of the row (44 half double crochets). At the end of the row, chain 6 stitches. Turn the piece.

Bilden visar de 6 luftmaskorna.

Row 28: Skip the first stitch and crochet 49 half double crochets, then 10 single crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn.

Row 29: Crochet 10 single crochets, then 49 half double crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn.

Row 30: Repeat row 28.

You should now be at the ankle at the end of this row. Fold the front piece over the back piece so that the yarn marker is on the side and the edges on the inside of the right leg are aligned. These edges should now be crocheted together, from bottom to top.

Here you can see the front piece folded over the back piece.

Row 31: Crochet 29 single crochets through both layers of the pants, in the two middle loops (the back loop of the piece closest to you and the front loop of the piece farthest from you) up to the crotch. The sides should now be joined together.

Here you can see how to crochet through both layers.

When you reach the crotch, continue crocheting the remaining 30 stitches with half double crochets in the back loop. Note that now you are only crocheting in the front piece, not both pieces.

Crotch/Body Section

Rows 32-33: Crochet 30 half double crochets in the back loop. Make 1 chain stitch, turn the piece.

Left Leg

Row 34 (this row starts from the top): Crochet 30 half double crochets in the back loop. At the crotch, continue crocheting 19 half double crochets along the inner edge of the left leg. This will join the back piece of the left leg with the front piece. Finish with 10 single crochets.

Continuation on the left leg from the back piece.

Rows 35-38: Alternate between rows 29 and 28 for a total of 4 rows. Start with row 29, which is 10 single crochets at the ankle part.

Rows 39-42: The following rows are worked like rows 22-26 for a total of 4 rows. On the first of the 4 rows (39), crochet a total of 44 stitches and leave the last 5 stitches unworked. The last row (42) should end at the ankle part.

Row 43: Join the front and back pieces together and crochet the entire side with 44 single crochets in both the front and back loops, like in row 31. Then continue crocheting a row of single crochets around the top of the pants to create a neat and even edge. Make a slip stitch in the first stitch when you've completed one round. Cut the yarn and secure the ends.

Steg 5

Size 68/74

Step 1 - Back Piece

The entire piece is crocheted in the back loop to create a ribbed effect. At the ends, crochet ribbing with 15 single crochets at one end and 10 single crochets at the other end. The middle section is crocheted in half double crochets. The section with 10 single crochets forms the ankles, and the 15 single crochets form the back/waist.

Here you can see the ribbed effect and the difference between single crochets and half double crochets.

If you want a longer ankle section to be able to fold up/down a longer part, you just need to adjust the number of single crochets from 10 to the desired length. Note that the number of chain stitches at the beginning of the left and right legs will also need to be adjusted.

Steg 6

Left Leg

Chain 63 chain stitches. If you're unsure how to crochet a chain, see the video below.

Row 1: Start in the second chain from the hook and crochet 10 single crochets. Then crochet 37 half double crochets, and finally 15 single crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn the piece. From now on, crochet everything in the back loop unless otherwise stated. The back loop is the loop farthest from you.

Picture of the back loop only.

Row 2: Crochet 15 single crochets, then 37 half double crochets. Finally, crochet 10 single crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn the piece.

Row 3: Crochet 10 single crochets, then 37 half double crochets. Finally, crochet 15 single crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn the piece.

Rows 4-11: Continue alternating rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 11 rows. It is important that you finish with an odd row, meaning that the last row ends with 15 single crochets.

Steg 7

Midsection/Crotch

Row 12: Crochet 15 single crochets, then 12 half double crochets. Leave the remaining stitches unworked. Make 1 chain stitch and turn the piece.

Row 13: Crochet 12 half double crochets, then 15 single crochets. Make 1 chain stitch and turn the piece.

Row 14: Crochet 15 single crochets, then 12 half double crochets. Crochet 36 chain stitches. Turn.

Right Leg

Rows 15-25: Repeat rows 1-11 (a total of 11 rows). On the first row (15), crochet in the back loop after completing all the stitches on the chain stitch. See the picture.

Place a marker in the last stitch you made on row 25. Do not cut the yarn. Now the back piece is complete and should look like this:

Steg 8

Step 2 - Front Piece

Right Leg

Continue crocheting where you left off on the back piece, and with that, the front of the dungarees begins.

Rows 26-30: Continue crocheting the right leg in the same way as the last rows of the back piece (alternating rows 2 and 3) for a total of 5 rows after the marker.

Row 31: Crochet 10 single crochets, then half double crochet the rest of the stitches on the row (52 half double crochets). At the end of the row, make 6 chain stitches. Turn the piece.

Row 32: Skip the first stitch, make 57 half double crochets, and then 10 single crochets. Make a chain stitch and turn.

Row 33: 10 single crochets, 57 half double crochets. Make a chain stitch and turn.

Rows 34-36: Repeat rows 32 and 33 for a total of 3 rows.

You should now be at the ankle after the last row. Fold the front piece over the back piece so that the yarn marker is on the side and the edges on the inside of the right leg are aligned. These edges should now be crocheted together, from bottom to top.

Here, you can see that the front piece is folded over the back piece.

Row 37: Crochet 35 single crochets through both layers, in the two middle loops (the back loop of the piece closest to you and the front loop of the piece farthest from you) up to the crotch.

Crochet through both layers.

When you reach the crotch, continue crocheting the remaining 32 stitches with half double crochets. Note that now you will crochet only in the front piece, not in both layers.

Crotch/Seat

Row 38-39: Crochet 32 half double crochets. Make a chain stitch, turn the piece.

Left leg

Row 40 (this row starts from the top): Crochet 32 half double crochets. At the crotch, continue crocheting 25 half double crochets along the inner side of the left leg. This will join the back piece of the left leg with the front piece. Finish with 10 single crochets in the back loop only.

Row 41-46: Alternate between rows 32 and 33 for a total of 6 rows start with row 33 which means beginning with 10 single crochets at the ankle area.

Row 47-50: The following rows will be crocheted as rows 26-30 for a total of 4 rows. On the first of these 4 rows (row 47) crochet 62 stitches and leave the last 5 stitches unworked. The final row (row 50) should end at the ankle area.

Row 51: Join the front and back pieces and crochet them together along the entire side with 62 single crochets in both the front and back loops as in row 37. Then continue by crocheting a round of single crochets around the top of the dungarees to create a neat and even edge. Make a slip stitch into the first stitch when you complete one round. Cut the yarn and secure the ends

Steg 9

From this step, both sizes are crocheted the same way.

Step 3 - The Crotch

In the crotch between the legs, there remains a hole to close. You can either crochet the hole shut with slip stitches or sew it shut with a needle. If you want to crochet the hole shut, first make a loop around the hook and pull it through a stitch on the far right (with the front side of the dungarees facing you). Then crochet slip stitches through both pieces (both loops) until the hole is closed. Cut the yarn and secure the ends. If there's still a gap, you can sew it shut with a yarn end. If you're unsure how to crochet slip stitches, see the video below.

Step 4 - Shoulder Straps

Use a measuring tape and stitch markers to figure out and mark where the straps should begin. You can choose to make straight straps or crossed ones, as shown in the example. Start by finding the center of the back and evenly place the straps on each side of the center where you want them. The straps will be approximately 2.5 cm wide. Mark both the beginning and the end of the straps to ensure you're happy with their placement.

Picture of the markers.

How to Crochet the Strap:

Make a loop and pull the loop from behind to the front at the marker on the far right. This will form the right corner of the right strap. Then, make 39 chain stitches. If you want a longer strap, add as many chain stitches as needed to reach your desired length. A chain of 39 stitches will be approximately 32 cm long. If you want a shorter strap, crochet fewer than 39 chain stitches.

Steg 10

Skip the first stitch closest to your hook, then make 38 single crochet stitches. Finish with two slip stitches at the edge of the pants.

Turn the piece. Skip the two slip stitches you just made, and crochet 35 single crochet stitches. In the third stitch from the end, skip that stitch and instead make a chain stitch (this forms the buttonhole). Then, make two single crochet stitches in the remaining two stitches.

Turn without making a chain stitch. Crochet 38 single crochet stitches back. When you reach the chain stitch, crochet a single crochet stitch around the chain. Finish with a slip stitch at the edge of the dungarees. Cut the yarn and secure the end.

Now, double-check the distance between the center marker and the left corner of the band. This distance should be the same as between the center marker and the right corner of the next band. Repeat the same procedure for the left band. Start at the right yarn marker of the left band (or adjust according to the measurement after the first band).

Step 5 - Buttons

Sew the buttons onto the front of the dungarees. Choose a thread and needle appropriate for the size of the buttons. Select button size to fit the button holes on the straps. In this example, buttons with a diameter of 2 cm were used and sewn on with cotton yarn (thickness 8/4).

Your dungarees are done :)

Crocheted Dungarees "Olle"
