Laptop Case "Tova"
Make your days at work more enjoyable with a handmade laptop case!
This beautiful laptop case is surprisingly quick to make and is also prettier than any other case that you can buy from the store. The case is crocheted with a large flower square (a variant of a granny square ) on the front and backpart with only half double crochets. You can easily adjust the size to fit your computer, by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches and rows. The computer case has been developed by Tova, who also works as MYO's photographer.
Yarn Consumption: One roll EKO Braided rope 4mm (500g), crochet hook size 6-7mm (both work).
Note that we in this instruction uses videos from out technique library. If you are looking for a full instruction video for a crocheted vest, we suggest the laptopcase Nora.
This is what you need:
Here's how to do it
The case is crocheted with a large flower square on the front and half double crochets on the back. You can easily adjust the size to fit your computer, by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches and rows. You start with the flower square, that should be on the front of your laptop case, and crochet it from the inside out.
Frontside
Start by crocheting the box that will adorn the front of your laptop case.
Flower square
If you have not crocheted flower squares, see the video below.
Round 1: Crochet a magic ring. Then chain 3, replacing the first double crochet. Then crochet 11 double crochet. In total, you have 12 double crochets (including the chains that replace a double crochet). Finish by crocheting a slip stitch in the last chain from the start. Cut and fasten off.
Round 2: Start with a new color. Attach the yarn to a stitch and chain three. We will make clusters of three double crochets. After you have chained your 3, you crochet a double crochet but skip the last pull through. Do the same one more time so that you have two half-finished double crochets +3 chain stitches. Last, pull through all the loops. Chain one.
In the next stitch, you do not need to start with chaining three, but instead crochet three half-finished double crochets (skipping the last pull through). Repeat: crochet a cluster in each stitch with one chain in between. Finish by crocheting a slip stitch in the last chain from the start. Cut and fasten off.
Round 3: Start in the hole where you finished the last cluster. Chain three, replacing the first double crochet. Crochet two more double crochets in the same hole. Chain two. In total, there will be three double crochets in each hole and two chain stitches in between, repeat the round. Finished by crocheting a slip stitch in the last chain from the start. Cut and fasten off.
Round 4: Start in a hole. Chain three, replacing the first double crochet. Crochet two more double crochets. Go to the next hole and crochet three double crochets. Go to the third hole and crochet (in the same hole) three treble crochets, chain two, three treble crochets (this forms a corner on the square).
Each side consists of three holes, repeat these three holes so you have four sides on the square. In the first and second hole, crochet three double crochets (no chain in between) and in the corner crochet (in the same hole) three treble crochets, chain two, three treble crochets.
If this is too small for your computer, crochet a few rounds with single crochets. If you have not crocheted single crochet before, see the video below. Crochet as many rounds as necessary to cover one side of your laptop.
Start in one stitch and crochet a single crochet in each stitch except at the corners, where you crochet three single crochets.
When you finish the square, you need to add a couple of rows of single crochet on two of the sides, to make the front of the case the same size as your computer. Crochet as many rows as needed to cover your computer. It's nice if you crochet an equal number of rows on both sides of the flower box.
Start at the right corner of the flower box and crochet single crochets until you are at the end. When you're done with your row, chain one and turn. Continue in the same way until you are done. Cut and fasten off. Do the same on the other side of the square (so that the square becomes a rectangle).
Backside
Row 1: Crochet a chain with as many chains that you need so that the backside becomes the same size as the front. The chain will be the short side of the back part. If you do not know how to crochet a chain, see video below
Start in the second stitch and crochet half double crochets until you are at the end of the row (you can crochet single crochets if you prefer). If you do not know how to crochet a half double crochet, see video below. When you finish the row, chain two (only chain one if you crochet single crochets) and turn.
Row 2 and forward: Skip the two chain stitches you just crocheted and start in the stitch after, crocheting half double crochets in each stitch until you are at the end of your row. Chain two and turn.
Repeat row 2 until the back piece is the same size as the front piece.
See the picture at the bottom what the back part looks like.
Assembly
Finally, crochet the parts together by crocheting single crochets around three sides of the case. Keep the outside (nice sides) of the two parts against each other and keep the wrong sides facing out. Start at a corner where short side meets the long side so you crochet the long side first. Crochet single crochet along the long side. Crochet three single crochets in the corner. Continue until you have attached three sides and have one short side open for your computer. You can see the technique in below video:
