Crochet mittens “Vilma”
Crochet These Cozy "Vilma" Mittens with Our MYO Basic Wool Yarn
Get ready for the cold with these warm and cozy mittens! This pattern is suitable for everyone, including beginners, as all steps are shown in the video. The mittens are comfortable and fit both men and women. You will need MYO Basic Wool yarn, 6 mm crochet hook and a tapestry needle.
Yarn requirement: Approximately 120g, depending on the size of the mittens you make. 120g is enough for a mitten with a short ribbing. Keep in mind that the yarn usage can vary depending on how tightly you crochet.
This is what you need:
Here's how to do it
This mitten pattern is beginner-friendly, and we will go through every step carefully together. A helpful tip is to use stitch markers, such as safety pins, to make the process easier. Also, feel free to jot down notes as you go, so you can keep track of how long you made your first mitten and replicate it exactly when making the second one. Happy crocheting! /Rebecca
Step 1: Crochet a Chain and Measure the Length for Your Mitten
Start by crocheting a chain that reaches from the top of your thumb to where the cuff of your mitten will end. The length of your mitten is entirely up to you.
To begin, make a slip knot:
- Wrap the yarn around your fingers 1.5 times.
- Cross the yarn strands and pull one end through the loop.
- Tighten the knot to secure it.
Next, crochet a chain:
- With the slip knot on your crochet hook, catch the yarn with the hook and pull it through the loop.
- Repeat this step until you reach the desired length for your chain.
- Finish with an extra chain stitch to prepare for the next step.
Tip: Write down the number of chains you've made, so you can make the second mitten the same size.
Now, turn the work and crochet single crochets (sc) back across the chain. Start in the second chain from the hook.
To crochet a single crochet:
- Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook.
- Catch the yarn and pull it up, so you have two loops on your hook.
- Catch the yarn again and pull it through both loops.
Continue crocheting single crochets in each chain stitch across. Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work to begin the next row.
Step 2: Cuff and Thumb
One round = crochet from bottom to top, then down again. This counts as one round.
CUFF
Start by crocheting the length of the cuff, the part that goes around the wrist. For reference, I have a short mitten, and my cuff is 10 stitches high.
Tip: Write down how many rows you crochet for the cuff so you can make the second mitten the same.
ROUND 1
The cuff is crocheted with slip stitches, but you will work only in the back loop of each stitch. Here’s how to do it:
- Insert your hook only into the back loop of each stitch, catch the yarn, and pull it through, then immediately pull it through the loop on your hook.
- Continue this until you reach the desired height for your cuff.
When you're done with the cuff, switch to single crochets for the next round:
- Crochet single crochets up the entire round.
- When you reach the last stitch in the row, increase by crocheting 2 single crochets into the same stitch.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
ROUND 2
Now, crochet down:
- Start by increasing in the first stitch (2 single crochets in the first stitch, skipping the first chain stitch).
- Then, crochet single crochets normally down to the point where the cuff begins.
- Crochet the cuff as you did earlier, using only slip stitches in the back loop of each stitch.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
ROUND 3
Now, for the thumb.
- Start by crocheting the cuff, using only slip stitches in the back loop again.
- Then, crochet single crochets until you reach the second-to-last stitch (you should have 2 stitches left).
- Make a decrease by crocheting two stitches together:
- Insert your hook into the second-to-last stitch, pull up the yarn so you have two loops on your hook.
- Then insert your hook into the last stitch, pull up the yarn again so you have three loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook to complete the decrease.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
ROUND 4:
Crochet down the round:
- Start with another decrease, just like in the previous step.
- Then crochet single crochets until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff again, using only slip stitches in the back loop.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn.
Now your thumb is done! Proceed to the next part of the mitten.
Step 3: Palm
Place your hand on the crochet and mark the space between the thumb and the opening of the palm to measure the length of your thumb.
Round 1: Build Chain for Palm
- Start by crocheting the cuff, using only slip stitches in the back loop.
- Then crochet single crochets until you reach the stitch where your marker is.
- In that stitch, crochet 2 single crochets into the same stitch.
- Then crochet a single crochet between the two single crochets you just made. This will start to build a new chain upwards.
- Continue crocheting single crochets as a chain until you are just below the top of your index finger. Place your hand on your work to measure the length.
Tip: Write down how many stitches you made for the next mitten to keep them even.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Crochet Down:
- Crochet single crochets down the round until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff using slip stitches only in the back loop.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Round 2: Increase
- Start by crocheting the cuff again, using slip stitches only in the back loop.
- Crochet single crochets until you reach the top, then increase in the last stitch by crocheting 2 single crochets into the same stitch.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Crochet Down:
- Start by crocheting another increase in the first stitch (2 single crochets in the same stitch).
- Continue crocheting single crochets until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff again using slip stitches only in the back loop.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
This completes the palm section of the mitten. You can now move on to the next step!
Rounds 3 and 4: Crochet 2 rounds without increases (or more if needed)
- Start with the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Crochet single crochets: Continue crocheting single crochets until you reach the top.
- Finish the row: End with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Crochet Down:
- Crochet single crochets down the round until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff again with slip stitches only in the back loop.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Now you have crocheted one round without an increase. Crochet one more round like this and then measure for your hand.
Tip: For reference, I crocheted 2 rounds without increases as I have narrow hands and prefer a snug mitten. If you want a looser mitten or have wider hands, you can crochet 3-4 rounds without increases.
When these rounds are finished, the width of the mitten should be about half the width of your palm. Keep in mind that after this step, you will crochet 2 rounds with decreases, so the width will decrease slightly.
Rounds 5 and 6: Crochet 2 rounds with decreases
- Start with the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Crochet single crochets: Continue crocheting single crochets until you reach the second-to-last stitch.
- Make a decrease: In the second-to-last and last stitch, crochet a decrease. To do this, insert your hook into the second-to-last stitch and draw up a loop, then insert your hook into the last stitch and draw up another loop so you have a total of 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw through all three loops.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Crochet Down:
- Crochet single crochets until you reach the second stitch.
- Make another decrease: Crochet a decrease in the first two stitches by working the decrease as described above.
- Continue crocheting single crochets down the round until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff again with slip stitches only in the back loop.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Repeat this round one more time for a total of 2 rounds with decreases.
Step 4: The Other Half of the Palm
Rounds 1 and 2: Crochet 2 rounds with increases
- Start with the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets until you reach the top of the palm.
- Make an increase: In the last stitch, crochet 2 single crochets into the same stitch.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Crochet Down:
- Make another increase: In the first stitch, crochet 2 single crochets into the same stitch.
- Crochet single crochets until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Repeat this step one more time for a total of 2 rounds with increases.
Rounds 3 and 4: Crochet 2 rounds without increases (or as many as the first half of the palm)
- Start with the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets until you reach the top of the palm.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Crochet Down:
- Crochet single crochets down until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff again with slip stitches only in the back loop.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Repeat this step until you have crocheted as many rounds as you did for the first half of the palm.
Rounds 5 and 6: Crochet 1 round with decreases + 1 round starting the thumb (Part 1)
Round 5: Decrease round
- Start with the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets until you reach the second-to-last stitch.
- Decrease: Crochet a decrease in the last two stitches of the round. (To decrease: insert the hook into the second-to-last stitch, yarn over, then insert the hook into the last stitch, yarn over again, and pull through all three loops on the hook.)
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Round 6: Crochet down with decreases and start the thumb
- Crochet down: Begin by crocheting a decrease in the first two stitches of the round.
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets down until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Starting the second half of the thumb:
- Start the thumb: Crochet slip stitches in the back loop for the cuff.
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets until you reach the second-to-last stitch.
- Decrease: Crochet a decrease in the last two stitches.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Now, mark the spot where the second half of the thumb will begin.
- Start with a decrease, then crochet single crochets down to the marker.
- In the marked stitch, crochet 2 single crochets in the same stitch.
- Start the chain: Crochet one single crochet between the two single crochets you just made to begin a new chain.
- Crochet the thumb chain: Continue by crocheting the same number of single crochets as you did for the first thumb (from Part 1).
- Finish with a chain stitch.
This will complete the start of the thumb.
Step 5: The Second Half of the Thumb
Round 1:
- Start with an increase: Crochet 2 single crochets in the first stitch.
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Round 2:
- Start with the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets across the row.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Round 3:
- Decrease: Start with a decrease by crocheting the first two stitches together.
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets down to the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Now you have completed the second half of the thumb.
Round 3:
- Start with the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets until you reach the second-to-last stitch.
- Decrease: Crochet the last two stitches together (a decrease).
- Finish the row: End with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Round 4:
- Decrease: Start by crocheting the first two stitches together (a decrease).
- Crochet single crochets: Crochet single crochets down until you reach the cuff.
- Crochet the cuff: Crochet slip stitches only in the back loop for the cuff.
- Finish with a chain stitch and turn your work.
Now, you have completed round 3 and 4, and are progressing towards completing your mitten.
Step 5: Join the Mitten
Crochet Slip Stitches: Work slip stitches in the back loops only all the way around the opening of the mitten.
Finish: Once you’ve completed the round, finish with a chain stitch. Cut the yarn and pull it through the loop to create a knot.
Weave in the Yarn Ends: Hide the yarn ends by sewing or crocheting them back and forth along the edge to secure them properly.
Repeat for the Starting Yarn End: Do the same with the yarn end from the beginning of the mitten.
Done! Great job, your mitten is finished and ready to use! 😊
