Crochet sweater “Neela”

Crochet this easy and stylish sweater

You may have seen the "Nenja cardigan"? This is a similar pattern, but as a sweater and in a different yarn. With the wonderful Dreamy Blend wool and a 6 mm crochet hook, you can crochet this trendy and stylish cardigan in granny squares. This is an easy pattern suitable for everyone.

Yarn Consumption: For size S/M, you need approximately 700 g, about 15 skeins. For the base color, we have used 8.5 skeins of white, and for the two other colors (purple and green), we have used 2.5 skeins of each. For L/XL, you'll need a few more skeins of the white.

Note that in this tutorial, we are using videos from our technique library. If you're looking for a full-length video for a crocheted cardigan, you can, for example, crochet the Linnea cardigan.

Here's how to do it

This wonderful sweater is crocheted almost like Nenja but instead of having an open cardigan it is crocheted like a closed sweater. We start by crocheting all the Granny squares and then we fasten them together. /Allow

Crochet Granny Squares

Start by crocheting 16 granny squares with the color combinations of your choice. The size of the squares for S/M is approximately 26-28 cm per side (8 rounds, with the three last rounds in white). For a larger size, use a larger crochet hook or add more rounds so that the squares become larger. For a smaller size, crochet less than 8 rounds. Two squares in width should cover your back and go down a bit onto your arms. The model is oversized.

If you are unsure how to crochet a granny square, you can watch the video below. Add 5 rounds to the square in the video to achieve the same size as the ones used in this cardigan. In total, there will be 8 rounds.

Round 1: Crochet a magic ring, and into the ring, start with 3 chain stitches, then crochet 2 double crochets. This forms the first double crochet pair of three. Then crochet two chain stitches. Repeat this (3 double crochets + 2 chain stitches) a total of 4 times. Finish with a slip stitch in the third chain from the beginning.

Round 2: Change color. Start in one of the holes, and into each hole, crochet three double crochets, two chain stitches, and three double crochets. This forms the corners. Do not crochet any chain stitches between the corners. Finish with a slip stitch in the third chain from the beginning.

Round 3: Change color. Start in a hole where you crocheted two chain stitches. In this hole (the corner), crochet three double crochets, two chain stitches, and three double crochets. The next hole will be a hole between the corners, crochet three double crochets. Then crochet the next corner in the same way as the first and continue in the same way. The corners are crocheted with three double crochets, two chain stitches, and three double crochets in the same hole. Between the corners, crochet three double crochets. Finish with a slip stitch in the third chain from the beginning.

Rounds 4-5: Crochet in the same way as round 3, with all corners crocheted with three double crochets, two chain stitches, and three double crochets in the same hole, and between the corners, crochet three double crochets. Finish in the same way as before. In the cardigan in the picture, we have used the same color for the last round on all squares.

Steg 2

Assembly

Step 1: Once you have finished your squares, lay them out according to the diagram below and crochet all the squares together. Crochet the squares together on the right side of the squares (hold the "wrong" sides together when crocheting them). Crochet in the stitches that are closest to each other. So, crochet through the back loop of the first square and the front loop of the second square. Once you have done this, you will have one large piece with all the squares connected.

NOTE! Do NOT crochet together the squares that have the blue solid markings in the diagram below (this is the opening of your sweater).
NOTE! If you want a larger opening, crochet fewer squares together. If you want a tighter opening, crochet more squares together.

You will crochet the squares together according to the dashed lines. Watch the video below to see the technique you can use to join the squares. There are several techniques, and you can use the one you find prettiest—this is just one example.

Step 2:

After you have crocheted all the squares together, follow the steps below to assemble the entire piece with all the squares into a sweater.

a) Crochet the pink parts together. This will form one sleeve.
b) Crochet the purple parts together. This will form the second sleeve.
c) Crochet the green parts together. This is below the sleeve and will become the side of your cardigan.
d) Crochet the turquoise parts together. This is below the second sleeve and will become the other side of your cardigan.

Now you have assembled the entire cardigan!

Steg 3

The final step is to crochet a round of single crochets around the openings (marked in the image below) of the sweater. Start with a loop attached to a stitch on each part of the sweater. Crochet a single crochet into each stitch. If you are unsure how to make a loop (slip knot) or a single crochet, watch the videos below.

Now you're done! Feel free to show off your sweater :)

Pattern

We start by crocheting all 16 granny squares in different colors. We have chosen to crochet the last round of each square in the same color (the main color).

Granny Squares

Make 16 squares. For size S/M, each square should measure approximately 26-28 cm. For a larger size, use a larger hook or add more rounds. Two squares in width should cover your back and go down a bit onto your arms.

Start with the color you want in the center of your squares. Make 1 MR.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, 2 ch, *3 dc, 2 ch* x3, finish with 1 sl st in the 3rd ch from the start of the round. There should be 12 dc on this round.
Change color or continue with the same color.

Round 2: Attach yarn with 1 sl st into a corner, then ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc, *move to the next corner, 3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc* x3, finish with 1 sl st in the 3rd ch from the start of the round, fasten off and cut the yarn. There should be 24 dc on this round.

Change color or continue with the same color.

Round 3:Attach yarn with 1 sl st into a hole on the side (not in a corner), ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, *move to the next corner, 3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc, move to the next “hole” on the side, 3 dc* x3, move to the next corner, 3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc, finish with 1 sl st in the 3rd ch from the start of the round, fasten off and cut the yarn. There should be 36 dc on this round.

Change color or continue with the same color.

Round 4: Crochet the same way as Round 3, i.e., 3 dc in each “hole,” 3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc in each corner, fasten off and cut the yarn. There should be 48 dc on this round.

Change color or continue with the same color.

Round 5: Crochet the same way as Round 4, i.e., 3 dc in each “hole,” 3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc in each corner, fasten off and cut the yarn. There should be 60 dc on this round.

After Round 5, the square should measure approximately 28 cm x 28 cm (S/M). Sometimes you may need to add one or two extra rounds to reach the same size (this depends on how tightly you crochet). More rounds = more yarn.

Assembly

Step 1:

Once you've finished your squares, arrange them according to the diagram below and join all the squares together. Join the squares on the right side (with the “wrong” sides facing each other while joining). Join through the nearest stitches: in the blo of the first square and the flo of the second square. After doing this, you will have one large piece with all the squares joined together.

NOTE! Do NOT join the squares with the solid blue marking in the diagram (this is the opening of your cardigan).
NOTE! If you want a larger opening, join fewer squares. If you want a tighter opening, join more squares.

You will join the squares according to the dashed lines.

Step 2:

After you've joined all the squares, follow the steps below to assemble the entire piece with all the squares into a cardigan.

a) Join the pink parts together. This will form one sleeve.
b) Join the purple parts together. This will form the second sleeve.
c) Join the green parts together. This is below the sleeve and will form the side of your cardigan.
d) Join the turquoise parts together. This is below the second sleeve and will form the other side of your cardigan.

Now you have assembled the entire cardigan!

The final step is to crochet a round of sc around the openings (marked) of the sweater.

You are done :)
