Crochet sun hat “Märta”

Crochet a cute hat for both children and adults!

This lovely hat is made with MYO's soft and cozy Cotton Cloud yarn and is both quick and fun to create.

The pattern includes four sizes, including an adult size, so you can make matching hats for yourself and your child. The entire hat is crocheted in one piece, which means there’s no need to sew parts together or weave in lots of ends afterwards.

This is a relatively quick project that also gives you the opportunity to explore a variety of crochet techniques. To make the hat, you’ll need MYO Cotton Cloud yarn (we used the colour Light Yellow), a 4 mm crochet hook, and a pair of scissors.

Yarn Consumption: approx. 55–70 g depending on size (55 g for XS, 70 g for L).

Please note that this instruction includes videos from our technique library together with images.

Information

Size Guide

The sun hat comes in four sizes:

  • (XS) The smallest size measures approx. 50 cm in circumference and fits children aged 1–3 years.
  • (S) The second size measures approx. 53 cm in circumference and fits children aged 4–7 years.
  • (M) The third size measures approx. 55 cm in circumference and fits children aged 7–12 years.
  • (L) The largest size measures approx. 57 cm in circumference and fits teenagers/adults.

The beginning of the crown is the same for all sizes. Please note that the pattern then separates into different sections for each size. Follow the instructions for the size you are making.

NOTE – Read before you begin!

After the last stitch of every round, close the round by making a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round before continuing to the next round. The hat is therefore not worked in a spiral, but round by round with each round joined at the end.

The pattern includes 2 special stitches: the puff stitch and the moss stitch.

In a puff stitch, 4 half double crochets are worked together in the same stitch. It is made as follows:

Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch. Pull up a loop so that you have three loops on the hook.
Repeat this 3 times until you have a total of nine loops on the crochet hook.

Yarn over and pull through all nine loops at the same time.

If you are unsure how to crochet a puff stitch, see the video below (Puff Stitch).

In a musch stitch, 4 double crochets are worked together in the same stitch. The 4 stitches are therefore joined both at the top and at the bottom, forming a circle-like shape. It is made as follows:

  1. Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch. Pull up a loop so that you have three loops on the hook.
  1. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops. You should now have 2 loops remaining on the hook. You have now made the first double crochet.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have 4 double crochets / 5 loops on the hook.

5. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.

Steg 2

Top of the Hat

NOTE! If a round in the crown section begins with a double crochet, make 3 ch instead. The 3 ch count as the first double crochet.

Round 1: Make a magic ring. Crochet 3 ch (counts as the first dc), then work 11 dc into the ring. You now have a total of 12 dc in the ring.

If you are unsure how to crochet a magic ring with double crochet stitches, see the video below (Magic Ring with Double Crochet).

Round 2: Work a puff stitch between two stitches from the previous round, then make 2 chain stitches. Continue with another puff stitch between the next two stitches, followed by 2 chain stitches. Repeat this pattern all the way around. You should now have a total of 12 puff stitches with 2 chain stitches between each. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round to close it.

Round 3: Make 3 chain stitches and 1 double crochet between the first two puff stitches from the previous round, then make 1 chain stitch. Work 2 double crochets between the next two puff stitches, followed by 1 chain stitch. Continue working 2 double crochets between each pair of puff stitches, with 1 chain stitch between, all the way around. You should now have a total of 24 double crochets in this round. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round to close it.

NOTE! From here, size XS differs from the other sizes in the crown section. Please note that the instructions for the larger sizes continue in the next step.

Size XS:

Round 4: Make 3 chain stitches in the first stitch and 1 double crochet in the second. Work 2 double crochets in the space between the stitch pairs from round 3. Then work 2 double crochets in the next 2 stitches, followed by 2 double crochets in the next space. Continue in this way all the way around (2 dc + 2 dc in the space). You should now have a total of 48 double crochets in this round. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round to close it.

Round 5: Work a puff stitch in the first stitch. Make 2 chain stitches. Skip 1 stitch. Work a puff stitch followed by 2 chain stitches. Continue in the same way all the way around. You should now have a total of 24 puff stitches with 2 chain stitches between each. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round to close the round.

Round 6: Work one moss stitch (4 double crochets worked together) between two puff stitches. NOTE: In the first moss stitch, the first double crochet is made as 3 chain stitches. Make 1 chain stitch, then work another moss stitch between the next two puff stitches, followed by 1 chain stitch. Continue in the same way all the way around. You should now have a total of 24 moss stitches / 48 stitches in total. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round to close the round.

Steg 3

Sizes S, M, L

Round 4: Make 3 chain stitches in a chain space, then work 2 double crochets into the first space between the stitch groups from the previous round. Then make 1 chain stitch. Work 3 double crochets into the next space, followed by 1 chain stitch. Continue working 3 double crochets into each space, with 1 chain stitch between, all the way around. You should now have a total of 36 double crochets in this round. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round to close it.

Round 5: Make 3 chain stitches in a chain space in the first stitch, then work 2 more double crochets in the next 2 stitches. You should now be at the first space between stitches from the previous round. Work 2 double crochets in this space. Then work 3 double crochets in the next 3 stitches, followed by 2 double crochets in the next space. Continue in this way all the way around (3 dc + 2 dc in the space). You should now have a total of 60 double crochets in this round. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round to close the round.

Round 6: Work a puff stitch in the first stitch. Make 2 chain stitches. Skip 1 stitch (the stitch indicated by the needle in the image). Work a puff stitch followed by 2 chain stitches, then skip 1 stitch. See image 20 (with needle). Continue in the same way all the way around. You should now have a total of 30 puff stitches with 2 chain stitches between each. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round to close the round.

Round 7: Work one musch stitch of 4 double crochets between two puff stitches. NOTE: In the first musch stitch, the first double crochet is made as 3 chain stitches. Make 1 chain stitch, then work another moss stitch between the next two puff stitches, followed by 1 chain stitch. Continue in the same way all the way around. You should now have a total of 30 musch stitches / 60 stitches in total. Finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round to close the round.

Side of the sun hat

NOTE – The first double crochet on all rounds in the side section (step 3) is replaced with a stacked single crochet!
See the video below if you need help (Stacked Single Crochet).

Side of the sun hat

Round 1 determines the width of the sun hat and therefore the size.

After Round 1 you will have the following stitch counts:

  • XS = 60 stitches
  • S = 64 stitches
  • M = 68 stitches
  • L = 72 stitches

It is important that the stitch count is divisible by 4 so that the brim will join evenly at the end.

From Round 2 onwards, the stitch count must remain the same to maintain the width. However, you can adjust the length here and make the hat shorter or longer depending on preference. Repeat Round 2 until the lower edge reaches approximately eyebrow level.

Size XS (S, M & L see steps 5–7)

Round 1: Start the round with a stacked single crochet. Work 2 double crochets. In the 4th stitch, make an increase (2 double crochets in the same stitch). Then work 3 double crochets, before the next increase. Repeat this pattern (3 double crochets, then an increase) all the way around. You should have 60 stitches in total. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first stitch.

Rounds 2–5: Start the round with a stacked single crochet. Then work 59 double crochets. You should have a total of 60 stitches in the round. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first stitch.

Repeat for a total of 4 rounds, or until the hat reaches your desired length.

Steg 5

Size S:

Round 1: Start the round with a stacked single crochet. Work 13 double crochets. In the 15th stitch, make an increase (2 double crochets in the same stitch). Then work 14 double crochets, before the next increase. Repeat this pattern (14 double crochets, then an increase) all the way around. You should have 64 stitches in total. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first stitch.

Rounds 2–6: Start the round with a stacked single crochet. Then work 63 double crochets. You should have a total of 64 stitches in the round. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first stitch.

Repeat for a total of 5 rounds, or until the hat reaches your desired length.

Steg 6

Size M:

Round 1: Start the round with a stacked single crochet plus 1 double crochet. *Work 6 double crochets, then make an increase (2 double crochets in the same stitch)*. Repeat between *...*. a total of 4 times.

Work 2 double crochets. *Work 6 double crochets, then make an increase (2 double crochets in the same stitch)*. Repeat between *...* a total of 4 times. You should have 68 stitches in total. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first stitch.

Rounds 2–7: Start the round with a stacked single crochet. Then work 67 double crochets. You should have 68 stitches in total. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first stitch.

Repeat for a total of 6 rounds, or until the hat reaches your desired length.

Steg 7

Size L:

Round 1: Start the round with a stacked single crochet. Work 3 double crochets. In the 5th stitch, make an increase (2 double crochets in the same stitch). Then work 4 double crochets, before the next increase. Repeat this pattern (4 double crochets, then an increase) all the way around. You should have 72 stitches in total. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first stitch.

Repeat for a total of 7 rounds, or until the hat reaches your desired length.

Steg 8

Brim / Lower edge (all sizes)

Round 1: *Skip the first stitch. Work 6 double crochets in the same stitch (i.e. stitch 2).

Skip the next stitch and make a slip stitch in the 4th stitch.*

This is a shell. Repeat between *...* all the way around the round.

You should have a total of: XS = 15, S = 16, M = 17, L = 18 shells in the first round.

Round 2: Make 3 slip stitches along the first 3 double crochets of the first shell from Round 1. You are now at the top middle of a shell.

Now work a shell of 7 double crochets in the stitch between the shells from the previous round (in the stitch indicated by the needle).

Make a slip stitch in the 3rd double crochet of the second shell from the previous round (where the needle is marking).

Continue in the same way (work a shell of 7 double crochets between each shell) all the way around the round. You should have a total of: XS = 15, S = 16, M = 17, L = 18 shells in the second round.

Information

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Step 9

Round 3: Make 4 slip stitches along the first 4 double crochets of the first shell from Round 2.

Now work a shell of 8 double crochets in the stitch between the shells from the previous round. Make a slip stitch in the 4th double crochet of the next shell from the previous round. Continue in the same way (a shell of 8 double crochets between each shell) all the way around the round. You should have a total of: XS = 15, S = 16, M = 17, L = 18 shells in the third round.

Finish off, cut the yarn, and weave in all ends. Your hat is now complete! :)

Step 10

Pattern with US Crochet Terms

This section uses crochet terminology. If you need help along the way, please refer to the simpler section, which includes more images and technique videos.

Size Guide

The sun hat comes in four sizes:

  • (XS) The smallest size measures approx. 50 cm in circumference and fits children aged 1–3 years
  • (S) The second size measures approx. 53 cm in circumference and fits children aged 4–7 years
  • (M) The third size measures approx. 55 cm in circumference and fits children aged 7–12 years
  • (L) The largest size measures approx. 57 cm in circumference and fits teenagers/adults

The beginning of the crown is the same for all sizes. Please note that the pattern then splits into different sections under separate headings.

NOTE – Read before you begin

After the last stitch of every round, close the round with a slip stitch in the first stitch before continuing to the next round. The hat is therefore worked round by round, not in a spiral.

Abbreviations

  • MR = magic ring
  • st = stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • ch = chain
  • inc = increase (2 sts in the same stitch)
  • sk = skip
  • ch-sp = chain space
  • puff st = puff stitch (4 half double crochets worked together in the same stitch; instructions with images/videos are in the “Beginner” section under Step 1)
  • moss st = moss stitch (4 double crochets worked together in the same stitch; in the first moss stitch of the round, the first dc is replaced with 3 ch; instructions with images are in the “Beginner” section under Step 1)
  • *…*** = repeat instructions within
  • [...] = work everything inside brackets in the same stitch
  • (...) = total number of stitches on the round

Crown of the hat

NOTE! If a round in the crown section starts with a double crochet, it is replaced with a stacked single crochet. The 3 ch counts as the first dc.

Round 1: 3 ch, 11 dc in a MR. (12)
Round 2: *1 puff st, 2 ch* x12. (12 puff sts)

Round 3: *3 ch, 1 dc between puff stitches, 1 ch, inc between puff stitches, 1 ch* x11 (24 dc)

NOTE: From here, size XS differs from the other sizes in the crown section. Please note that the instructions for the larger sizes continue further down.

Size XS:

Round 4: *3 ch, 1 dc, inc in ch-sp, 2 dc, inc in ch-sp* x11 (48)

Round 5: *1 puff st, 2 ch, sk 1 st *x24 (24 puff sts)

Round 6: *1 musch stitch in ch-space, 1 ch* x24 (48)

Sizes S, M, L

Round 4: *3 ch, 2 dc* between puff stitches, 1 ch, *3 dc between puff stitches, 1 ch* x11 (36 dc)

Round 5: 3 ch, 2 dc, inc in ch-sp, *3 dc, inc in ch-sp* x11 (60)

Round 6: *1 puff st, 2 ch, sk 1 st *x30 (30 puff sts)

Round 7: *1 moss stitch in ch-space, 1 ch* x30 (60)

Side of the sun hat

NOTE: The first double crochet on all rounds in the side section (Step 3) is replaced with a stacked single crochet.

Round 1 determines the width of the sun hat and therefore the size.
After Round 1 you will have:

  • XS = 60 stitches
  • S = 64 stitches
  • M = 68 stitches
  • L = 72 stitches

It is important that the stitch count is divisible by 4 so the brim will join properly at the end.

From Round 2 onwards, the stitch count must remain the same to maintain the width. However, you can adjust the length here and make the hat shorter or longer depending on preference. Work Round 2 repeatedly until the lower edge reaches approximately eyebrow level.

Size XS:

Round 1: *3 dc, inc* x12 (60)
Rounds 2–5: 60 sts for a total of 4 rounds (60)

Size S:

Round 1: *14 dc, inc* x4 (64)
Rounds 2–6: 64 sts for a total of 5 rounds (64)

Size M:

Round 1: 2 dc, *6 dc, inc* x4, 2 dc, *6 dc, inc* x4 (68)
Rounds 2–7: 68 sts for a total of 6 rounds (68)

Size L:

Round 1: *4 dc, inc *x12 (72)
Rounds 2–8: 72 sts for a total of 7 rounds (72)

Brim / Lower edge

The number of shells per round depends on size:

  • XS = 15 shells per round
  • S = 16 shells per round
  • M = 17 shells per round
  • L = 18 shells per round

Round 1: *sk 1 st, [6 dc], sk 1 st, sl st* x15 (XS) x16 (S), x17 (M), x18 (L)

Round 2: 3 sl st, *[7 dc in the space between shells], sl st in the 3rd dc of the next shell* x15 (XS) x16 (S), x17 (M), x18 (L)

Round 3: 4 sl st, *[8 dc in the space between shells], sl st in the 4th dc of the next shell* x15 (XS) x16 (S), x17 (M), x18 (L)

Finish off, cut the yarn, and weave in all ends. Your hat is now complete! :)

Rounds 2–8: Start the round with a stacked single crochet. Then work 71 double crochets. You should have a total of 72 stitches in the round.

Steg 9

Round 3: Make 4 slip stitches along the first 4 double crochets of the first shell from Round 2.

Now work a shell of 8 double crochets in the stitch between the shells from the previous round. Make a slip stitch in the 4th double crochet of the next shell from the previous round. Continue in the same way (a shell of 8 double crochets between each shell) all the way around the round. You should have a total of: XS = 15, S = 16, M = 17, L = 18 shells in the third round.

Finish off, cut the yarn, and weave in all ends. Your hat is now complete! :)
