Steg 1

Step 1 - buff

Row 1: Make a slip knot and crochet a chain. Make the chain the same length as from your collarbone to your nose. This will be the height of your buff. For reference, we have crocheted 22 chain stitches. Crochet quite loosely. Add two extra chain stitches. We have made 24 stitches on the chain. The length of the buff + two chains is what you have crocheted. If you are not sure how to make a slip knot and a chain, see below technique videos.

Row 2: We will crochet the first row with double crochet. Make the first double crochet in the third chain (skip two chains). The first two chains we skipped is counted as the first double crochet.

Continue to crochet one double crochet in each chain. If your chain is 24, you should have 22 double crochet plus the 2 chain stitches. Finish the row with chain 2 and turn your work. If you are not sure how to make a double crochet, see below technique videos.

Steg 2

Row 3: We will crochet a double crochet in the third stitch, skip the first two chains (with which we finished the last row), these will count as a double crochet. Now, proceed in the same way as the first row, one double crochet in each stitch. Remember to always have the same number of double crochet on each row.

Crochet in the same way for as many rows as you wish. Keep in mind, when you put the short sides together you should be able to get the buff over your head. For reference, we have crocheted 39 rows. Do not cut the yarn, but proceed to the next step.

Steg 3

Step 2 - attach the short sides

When you are satisfied with the length of your buff, it's time to sew or crochet the short sides together. We have chosen to crochet the sides together but it is just as good to sew them together. If you crochet, it will be a clear seam, while it will be more invisible if you sew the sides together.

Start by making a chain and turn your work. Crochet your last row with your first row to attach the sides together, see below photo. Crochet with single crochet, see below technique video if you need help on how to crochet a single crochet. If you are not sure how to make a single crochet, see below technique videos.

This picture shows hoe to attach the short sides.

Test your buff, so you are satisfied with the size. Chain 1. Cut and attach the yarn. Let the buff remain out-and-in for the next step.

Steg 4

Step 3 - hood

Row 1: Start with a slip knot and attach it to the center of the bottom edge of the buff. It doesn't matter exactly where, but opposite where the buff was crocheted together is a good place. We will crochet single crochet along the edge of the buff, approximately two single crochet in each double crochet on the buff.

This picture shows två single crochet in each double crochet.

Crochet almost the entire lap, you can leave 1 double crochet between where you started and where you end. In our example, we crocheted 73 single crochet. Finish the round with chain 2 and turn.

This picture shows 1 double crochet gap between start and end.
Steg 5

Row 2: Crochet a double crochet in each stitch, skipping the chain stitches we just crocheted (as we did with the buff). You can begin to fold the edge, so the hood goes over the buff. If you have 73 single crochet, you should have 73 double crochet, remember that the first 2 chains stitches replaces one double crochet.

For reference, our first row will be 72 double crochets + the chain stitches replacing a double crochet. Finish with chain two and turn.

Row 3 and forward: Proceed in the same way, as many rows as you wish on your hood. Fold the sides together at the top to see if the balaclava fits. You can test by assembling your hood with safety pins at the top. For reference, we have crocheted 27 rows on the hood.

Steg 6

Step 4 - Assembly the hood

When you are satisfied with the size of your hood, it's time to sew it together. You can choose whether you want to crochet the hood together or sew it together. I chose to sew together the hood to get a seam as invisible as possible.

Start with a loop and cut the yarn, leave a yarn tail as long as the size of the side and add approx 10 cm. Sew the corners together first. You can use your crochet hook to go up and down with the yarn so the sides fasten.

The top of the balaclava.
This picture shows how to sew together.

Continue to sew the sides and stitches together, that is opposite each other, all the way. Before attaching the yarn tail, try and see if you are happy with the size. If you want the hood bigger or smaller, it's easy to unleash the yarn to add or remove rows. When you feel satisfied, attach the yarn end. Check the balaclava, if you find any yarn ends or similar that you need to attach. If you are not sure how to fasten the yarn tail, see below technique video.

Test your balaclava, fold down the buff and fold a edge on the hood and you're done!
