Crochet men's cardigan “Alfred”
This timeless men's cardigan has a simple and beginner-friendly design.
This cardigan is warm and cozy, a great project to crochet for yourself, your husband, friend, or father! The cardigan is written in men's sizes but is unisex in style. You need the yarn MYO Basic wool, crochet hook 6 mm for ribbing and 7 mm for body/sleeves. You will also need a measuring tape, a needle, stitch markers, scissors, and 5 pieces of 35 mm buttons. The size on the pictures are size M. The cardigan has a tight fit, if you want a looser fit we recommend to go up one size.
Yarn Consumption: Approximately 900 g. Expect about +100 g for each size up. The yarn usage varies depending on how tightly you crochet and differences in length, etc.
Note that in this instruction, we use videos from our technique school along with explanatory pictures.

Here's how to do it
The pattern is quick to crochet thanks to the use of a larger crochet hook. The pattern uses the technique of single crochet for the ribbing at the bottom of the cardigan, the collar, and the cuffs on the sleeves. The actual cardigan is crocheted in the beautiful Herringbone stitch. The pattern provides a size chart for S, M, L, XL, and XXL, but you can easily customize the cardigan to your own measurements by adding or decreasing the number of starting chains at the beginning of each part of the project. The cardigan is crocheted in pieces from the bottom up, which are then sewn together. In the end, the ribbed collar is crocheted. The pattern is written for size M, with smaller and larger sizes in parentheses (). If there is only one number, it applies to all sizes. /Johanna K

BACK PIECE
M (S, L, XL, XXL)
Ribbing at the bottom of the back piece
Row 1: With the smaller crochet hook (6 mm), chain 9. Work 1 single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across, turn. You will have 8 stitches on the row. If you are unsure how to crochet chain stitches or single crochet, see the videos below.
Row 2: Chain 1 (this does not count as a stitch, neither here nor throughout the work). Work 1 single crochet in the back loop of each stitch across, turn. You will have 8 stitches on the row. If you are unsure how to crochet in the back loop only (Back Loop Only), see the video below.
Rows 3-42 (M) 38 (S), 46 (L), 50 (XL), 54 (XXL): Repeat row 2. After the final row, turn and switch to the larger crochet hook.

Row 1: Now switch to the larger hook. Chain 1, then work single crochet stitches evenly along the length of the ribbing (1 stitch per row), for a total of 42 stitches (M), (38 (S), 46 (L), 50 (XL), 54 (XXL)).

Row 2: Chain 2 (not included as a stitch here or throughout the project), work 1 herringbone double crochet in each stitch, turn. You should have a total of 42 (38 (S), 46 (L), 50 (XL), 54 (XXL)) stitches. If you're unsure how to make a herringbone double crochet, see the video below.

Rows 3-44: Repeat row 2 until the back piece measures approximately 66 cm. Crochet fewer rows for a shorter cardigan or crochet more rows for a longer cardigan. You should have the same number of stitches on each row. If you adjust the number of rows, make sure to write down how many rows you crochet. You will need this information later on.

Mark the head opening on the back piece.
Count 14 (12(S), 16(L), 18(XL), 20(XXL)) stitches from both the left and right sides. Place a stitch marker in the next stitch. When you measure from the stitch markers, the neck opening should be 14 stitches wide.

Right Shoulder of the Back Piece
Row 1: Chain 2, work 1 herringbone double crochet in each stitch up to the marker, turn. A total of 14 (12(S), 16(L), 18(XL), 20(XXL)) stitches.

Row 2: Chain 2, work 1 herringbone double crochet in each stitch. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for assembly. If you're unsure how to fasten off your yarn ends, refer to the video below.

Left Shoulder
Attach the yarn to the left stitch next to the marker.
Row 1: Chain 2, work 1 herringbone double crochet in each stitch. Turn. You should have a total of 14 (12(S), 14(L), 16(XL), 18(XXL)) stitches.
Row 2: Chain 2, work 1 herringbone double crochet in each stitch across. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for assembly.

Ribbing and Buttonholes Along the Front Panels:

Row 1: Attach the yarn at the edge of the right front panel, using the smaller crochet hook.

Crochet 1 single crochet in each stitch across the ribbing (8 stitches), crochet single crochets evenly along the edge of the panel (66 stitches).
