Crochet Beret “Honse”
Hello!
We are so glad you are here! In this exclusive collaboration, crochet extraordinaire Moa 'Honse' Blomqvist has infiltrated MYO HQ with a passion for colour, playfulness and her signature dose of nostalgia.
(The pom pom in the picture is made from leftover yarn but can be made perfectly from Eko Nano)
This beret is a perfect detail to your outfit. The instructions are made for beginners and the only thing you need is the yarn EKO Nano and a crochet hook of 6 mm.
Designed by Moa, founder of Honse, and made possible by MYO Make Your Own
Yarn consumption: 250g of EKO Nano tube yarn
This is what you need:
Here's how to do it
The beret is crocheted in half double crochets in the back loop, new and fun pattern! You choose how big you want to crochet your beret, and you choose whether you want to make pom poms in the same yarn as the beret or take some leftover yarn.
The entire pattern is crocheted in half double crochets in the back loop only, except for round 1 & 2.
Step 1 - Inner Ring
Begin by creating a loop that you insert your crochet hook into. One way to do this is by wrapping the yarn around your index finger and middle finger, then pulling the yarn through the loops around your fingers to form a loop. Insert the crochet hook into this loop. Next, pull the yarn end to tighten the loop around the crochet hook. Now, crochet a chain by yarn over and pulling through the loop that is on the crochet hook. Make a total of 5 chains. To form a ring, make a slip stitch into the first chain you made. Insert the crochet hook into the first chain, yarn over, and pull through the loop on the crochet hook in one go. Done!
Round 2
Make a loop. Then crochet eight half double crochets into the ring. 2 in each stitch. To crochet a half double crochet, yarn over your crochet hook, insert the hook into the ring, and pull up a loop (you now have three loops on your hook). Yarn over again and pull through all loops on the hook; you have completed one half double crochet. Continue crocheting seven more half double crochets for a total of eight stitches. Complete the round by slip stitching into the first half double crochet, pulling the yarn through directly. You should have 8 stitches in total for this round.
We will begin to increase the number of stitches in each round to create the top of the beret.
Round 3: Make a loop. Now we are going to crochet all half double crochets in the back loop only. When crocheting half double crochets, each stitch has 3 loops. To identify the back loop, observe your stitches: the loop farthest from you is the back loop (see image for clarification). Throughout this round, crochet two half double crochets in each of the eight stitches.Complete the round by slip stitching into the first stitch, pulling the yarn through directly. You should now have 16 stitches in total for this round.
Round 4: Make a loop. Crochet in the back loop only; make two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next stitch (you will alternate between these throughout the round, placing two half double crochets in every other stitch). Repeat this pattern until you finish the round. End the round by slip stitching into the first stitch, pulling the yarn through directly. You should now have 24 stitches in total for this round. The images below show how it looks after rounds 4, 5, 6, and 7.
Round 5: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only; two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next two stitches. Repeat until you finish the round. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. In total, you have 32 stitches in this round.
Round 6: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only; two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next three stitches. Repeat until you finish the round. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. In total, you have 40 stitches in this round.
Round 7: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only; two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next four stitches. Repeat until you finish the round. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. In total, you have 48 stitches in this round.
Round 8: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only; two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next five stitches. Repeat until you finish the round. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. In total, you have 56 stitches in this round.
Round 9: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only; two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next six stitches. Repeat until you finish the round. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. In total, you have 64 stitches in this round.
Round 10: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only; two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next seven stitches. Repeat until you finish the round. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. In total, you have 72 stitches in this round.
Round 11: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only; two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next eight stitches. Repeat until you finish the round. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. In total, you have 80 stitches in this round.
Round 12: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only; two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next nine stitches. Repeat until you finish the round. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. In total, you have 88 stitches in this round.
At this point, you can make a choice if you want to make a slightly smaller size you skip round 13 and if you want to make a slightly larger size you continue on round 13.
Round 13: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back only; two half double crochets in the first stitch, then one half double crochet in the next 10 stitches. Repeat until you finish the round. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. In total, you have 96 stitches in this round.
We will crochet a round without increasing the number of stitches. We crochet this to get a small flat part that separates the top of the beret from the bottom. The stitch numbers in brackets are the ones you follow if you have crocheted row 13 above.
Round 1: Crochet a loop. Crochet a half double crochet in each stitch in the back loop only. Finish the round by going down the first stitch and picking up yarn and pulling through straight away. In total, you have 88 (96) stitches on your lap.
We will start making decreases on the beret to shape the lower part.
Round 1: Crochet a loop. We will crochet a decrease, two half double crochets should become one. You still crocheted all stitches in back loops only. Yarn over your crochet hook and go down with the crochet hook into the first stitch (back loop), pick up yarn and pull through (you have three loops on your crochet hook). Go down into the next stitch, pick up yarn and pull through. Now you have four loops on your crochet hook. Pick up yarn on your crochet hook and pull through all four loops. You have crocheted a half double crochet reduction.
After this, crochet half double crochets (one in each) in the next 9 (10) stitches. Repeat. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. You should have 80 (88) stitches in this round.
Round 2: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only. Crochet a half double crochet decrease. Then crochet 8 (9) half double crochet, one in each. Repeat. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. You should have 72 (80) stitches in this round.
Round 3: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only. Crochet a half double crochet decrease. Then crochet 7 (8) half double crochet, one in each. Repeat. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. You should have 64 (72) stitches in this round.
Round 4: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only. Crochet a half double crochet decrease. Then crochet 6 (7) half double crochet, one in each. Repeat. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. You should have 56 (64) stitches in this round.
Round 5: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only. Crochet a half double crochet decrease. Then crochet 5 (6) half double crochet, one in each. Repeat. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. You should have 48 (56) stitches in this round.
Round 6: Crochet a loop. Crochet in the back loop only. Crochet a half double crochet decrease. Then crochet 4 (5) half double crochet, one in each. Repeat. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. You should have 40 (48) stitches in this round.
Last Round
Turn the beret so it has the inside out.
Round 7: Crochet a loop. Crochet in back loop only. We will crochet single crochet. Go down into your loop with the crochet hook. Pick up the yarn and pull through, pick up yarn again and pull through all loops. Repeat. Finish the round by going down the first stitch, pick up yarn and pull through all loops. You should have 40 (48) stitches in this round.
Fasten off all the yarn tails to the inside of the beret. To do this, take the yarn tail under a stitch and tie a knot. Then hide the rest of the yarn tails under some stitches.
Optional: Block your beret
If you want to block your beret, soak the whole beret in water and stretch it out a little so that it gets a nice shape, then the fibers will lay down correctly. One tip is to put a plate over the beret so it will keep its shape while it dries.
Hope you like your new beret!
